Victory and Third Place Give Dixon Clio Cup Series Lead
James Dixon has surged to the top of the AirAsia Renault Clio Cup UK driver standings after a highly successful weekend at Oulton Park Island Circuit in Cheshire - the 21-year-old securing his third win of the season in round seven and backing that up with yet another podium in round eight.Earning pole position for both races during qualifying on Saturday, 4th June, the Stockbury driver produced a tremendous lights-to-flag win in the opening encounter before claiming his fifth podium of the year during round eight on Sunday, 5th June. Overturning a 21-point deficit, the Total Control Racing driver is now tied on 197 points with former double Clio Cup champion Paul Rivett but thanks to his greater number of wins - three to Rivett's two - James heads to Croft Circuit in North Yorkshire a fortnight from now as the series leader."Qualifying was good for us, a double pole position is always fantastic, and then the first race went as well as we could have hoped", said James, "I had to be very consistent lap after lap, which we managed to do, so I'm really happy to have had another win. Third in the second race isn't exactly what I wanted but it's still very good for the championship."Throughout Saturday afternoon's sun-baked seventh round James was under massive pressure but he didn't put a wheel wrong over the course of the 12 laps on his way to the overall victory and his fourth 'Graduate Cup' class win of the season.Getting away brilliantly at the start from pole position, he steered his ABP Heating, Weidmuller and The Art of Decorating-supported Clio into a good lead and saw off the pack with an impeccable drive. Poignantly, James also dedicated the success to TCR director Graham Pearce who very sadly passed away a few weeks ago.Sunday's action delivered an altogether different challenge with rain marking James' first ever experience of a wet race at Oulton Park. Getting away from the grid in the lead he held on into lap two but at Old Hall, Jack Goff sliced up the inside - pushing James wide onto the grass.Recovering onto the track in second position, the TCR man remained there until lap nine when Aron Smith managed to grab the inside line into the first corner. From there, James consolidated his third place to notch-up podium number five."That was very hard work, I didn't know what to expect as I've never had a wet race at Oulton Park before so it was definitely a challenge" he commented, "I got a good start but Jack (Goff) and Aron (Smith) were just that bit quicker. I had too much understeer but third is still a good result for us and obviously great for the championship too."It's also important to keep bagging these results to help us try and secure the funding for next year. I really want to step-up into touring cars in 2012, with a proven race-winning team, but we need to raise more backing to make that happen."James has just two weeks to wait until the next two rounds of the 2011 AirAsia Renault Clio Cup UK which will take place over the weekend 18th/19th June at Croft Circuit in North Yorkshire.Provisional 2011 AirAsia Renault Clio Cup UK Championship Standings (after Rd8):1st James Dixon, 197pts; 2nd Paul Rivett, 197pts; 3rd Aron Smith, 182pts
