Al Harthy Takes Second Podium Of Weekend
Porsche Carrera Cup GB Championship racer Ahmad Al Harthy took his second Pro-Am 1 podium of the weekend, and sixth of the season, during a wet eighth round at Oulton Park Island Circuit this afternoon, Sunday, 5th June.Starting the encounter from Pro-Am 1 pole position for the first time in his Porsche Carrera Cup GB career, the 29-year-old made one of his now customary fantastic getaways and looked very comfortable indeed in the class lead.Over the first eight laps everything looked well placed for Ahmad's second ever Pro-Am 1 victory but as the race reached mid-distance, the Oman Air Racing Team driver began to lose ground as a dry line appeared and he started to struggle for grip from his wet-weather tyres.Slipping back to second in Pro-Am 1 on lap 10 at the hairpin, Ahmad continued to suffer with a rapidly decreasing level of grip. During the final third of the race though he managed to cope with the issue and maintain second place to end the weekend with a richly deserved double podium.Such was his pace in the early laps, the Oman Air, Nawras, National Bank of Oman, Brand Oman, Oman Ministry of Sports Affairs and Oman Ministry of Tourism-backed driver was just 0.2 seconds shy of the fastest Pro-Am 1 lap of all."We had another great start today and our pace was really strong for the first half of the race, I was leading my pack comfortably and we were in very good shape", said Ahmad, "I kept pushing hard but as the track dried the tyres started to deteriorate at a rapid pace."I'm still very pleased with what we've achieved this weekend, two podiums is fantastic and just what we want. I'm delighted with my own performance too this weekend, in the dry and the wet we've been quick and it's so important to have that consistency. Thank you to the Oman Air Racing Team for yet another great job and to each of my sponsors for their wonderful support."Next on the calendar for Ahmad is by far the biggest challenge of his motor racing career to date, a visit to the awe-inspiring Nürburgring Nordschleife in Germany for round nine of the Porsche Carrera Cup GB Championship on Saturday, 25th June. As well as forming part of the 2011 season, the event will bring together around 200 of the world's top Porsche Carrera Cup competitors to battle it out for the inaugural 'Porsche Carrera World Cup' over six laps of the daunting 13-mile circuit. The visit to Germany also means Porsche Carrera Cup GB will forego its regular slot on the Dunlop MSA British Touring Car Championship package at Croft in North Yorkshire two weeks from now.Provisional 2011 Porsche Carrera Cup GB Championship 'Pro-Am 1' Standings (after Rd8):1st Jonas Gelzinis, 89pts; 2nd Rory Butcher, 50pts; 3rd Ahmad Al Harthy, 47pts
