PARKER TAKES A WIN WITH JELLEYStephen Jelley took his second win of the season – the fourth for Team Parker Racing-run drivers – in the Porsche Carrera Cup GB at Oulton Park. The Leicester driver was supreme in wet conditions in his Parker with Juta entry, taking the chequered flag almost five seconds clear of the opposition after leading from start to finish. After pocketing the bonus point for fastest lap, this combined with his second place (plus another fastest lap) in the opening race to lift Jelley from fourth to third in the championship.Jelley was third fastest in qualifying so took that slot on the grid for race one, while his second-fastest time was just 0.001 seconds slower, giving him second on the grid for race two. In the dry opening race, Jelley stayed on the tail of the leading duo for most of the race, and finally squeezed into second place on the last lap with an ultra-committed move on Michael Meadows.Meadows cut the chicane on each of the final two laps, rejoining in front of Jelley, who felt that this potentially cost him a chance of attacking James Sutton for victory. “I thought I was already past him on the penultimate lap,” said Jelley. “I passed him on the brakes but he stonked across the grass and chopped in front, which I was a bit miffed about. On the next lap he did exactly the same, and I thought ‘I’m not having this’, so I just stuck it down the inside into the next corner. “I’d have been right on James without that – it definitely cost me. We had the car spot-on for the race and it was very consistent.”In race two, Jelley got the best start from the outside of the front row, instantly pulled out 1.1 seconds on lap one and then extended his advantage throughout. “I saw I had a big gap and thought the tyres might not last the race – there was a very dry line appearing and I was having to find the wet bits to cool them. It was just a matter of keeping my head – I’m very happy with that.”Team-mate Euan Hankey, twice a winner this season, had a disappointing weekend to claim ninth in race one and sixth in race two, these results meaning he drops from second to fourth in the championship. The Somerset ace was running sixth in the opening race, in the fight for fourth, when he ran off the road at the ultra-fast Druids Bend, costing him three places. Later on he rose as high as fourth before being forced to settle for sixth. “In the first race I was going into Druids, hit the brakes as normal and the front end just went away completely,” he said. “I almost hit the barriers before I got back on the track sideways. In the second race the tyres went away and there was nothing I could do.”Team principal Stuart Parker summed up: “It’s been a good weekend. In both races, wet or dry, Stephen was the fastest man out there. He drove a fantastic first race, had the legs on the guys ahead, but didn’t quite have the opportunity to go for the lead. In the second he got them at the start and controlled it. Euan had a character-building weekend but with a bit of work he’ll be on form in the next round at the Nurburgring.”PLANT EMBEDS HIMSELF IN TOP SIXThe Team Parker Racing ‘youth team’ of Carrera Cup rookies carried away a best result of sixth – courtesy of Richard Plant – from the Oulton weekend.Yorkshireman Plant spent much of the first race chiselling to pass Ahmad Al Harthy, and finally made the move stick a few laps from home, just as Hankey went off track briefly to promote Plant to his final position of sixth.Unfortunately, just after this manoeuvre, Team Parker Racing’s Sam Tordoff made contact with Al Harthy, damaging his radiator and forcing him out of the race while in the mix immediately behind Plant. In the second race, Plant again passed Al Harthy to this time finish seventh. Tordoff spent much of the race just behind his fellow Yorkshireman before finally taking 10th position.“Once I got past Ahmad in the first race I felt I could have made up more places,” said Plant, “but the car was a bit loose by then and I ran out of time. In the second race I was drifting everywhere and it was difficult.”Tordoff said: “We had a problem in qualifying with locking wheels but I had a great first half of race one. In the second race I was happy to make progress in the wet, but annoyed that I ran wide onto the grass and gave away ninth.”Team principal Stuart Parker said: “Planty and Sam had never driven these cars in the wet before, so it was a huge learning curve for them. They did a cracking job, acquitted themselves well and they keep building for the future.”PIERCE GETS FOURTH IN PRO-AM1 DIVISIONScottish racer Derek Pierce took the best result for the Dextra JD Pierce by Parker team in the pro-am1 class, with a fourth place in the opening race.Pierce spent the early laps in contention for a podium position before dropping away and settling for fourth. In the second race, he ran fifth in class before going wide at Druids, finally taking sixth behind team-mate Alex Martin.West Countryman Martin added this fifth place to a sixth in the opening race on a weekend where useful points were scored in the class.“I got a brilliant start in race one, but apart from that I haven’t really got properly into the groove this weekend,” said Pierce. “I tore most of the splitter off when I went off in race two, then I just did my best. Not a great result, but onwards and upwards.”“We took a gamble on set-up for the opening race,” said Martin. “It didn’t really pay off but I didn’t lose anything. I wanted to copy Stephen Jelley’s for race two, but then it rained.”Team principal Stuart Parker said: “They both had another learning weekend. They got some good results by keeping it on the island to get to the finish and keeping the cars in one piece – not an easy task in those conditions!”As part of the ultra-popular British Touring Car Championship package, the Porsche Carrera Cup GB enjoyed live coverage of its two races at Oulton Park on ITV4 and ITV4 HD, and was streamed live at itv.com/touringcars. The series now moves on to the legendary Nurburgring Nordschleife circuit in Germany for a one-off race on June 25.
