SWINDON speedway legend Leigh Adams has undergone a marathon six-hour operation after sustaining multiple injuries whilst practising for the Finke Desert off-road race in Alice Springs.Adams, who retired from speedway at the end of last season, has suffered extensive spinal cord damage as well as fractured vertebrae, punctured lungs, broken ribs and scapula, and a small fracture to his neck. His wife Kylie said: “He has no feeling in his legs at present except a little bit in one thigh. But that situation could certainly change and improve in the weeks and months ahead. He faces a long hard road to recovery.“He's currently in intensive care but could be moved out today into the special spinal unit. He's actually very stable and probably a bit too well to be in intensive care. He's very alert and talking. Leigh has no head injuries at all which is wonderful news.”

POOLE skipper Davey Watt admitted news of fellow countryman Leigh Adams’ serious injuries overshadowed the Pirates’ Elite League clash with Wolverhampton.Watt’s side took a 56-36 victory at Wimborne Road, Darcy Ward top-scoring with paid-13 and Watt dropping just one point from four rides.Watt said: “It was really difficult for us Aussies to go out there tonight and do a job as all our thoughts were way back home with Leigh Adams and his family.“When we heard about we were all totally stunned, as I am sure most of the speedway fraternity were, and to be honest we were hoping for once for a rain-off as having to go out and race with that on your mind wasn't easy. We are just glad we have got this meeting through.”(FIXTURES)
