Engineering students at the University of Hertfordshire have secured their title as the best UK Formula Student team for the second year running as they raced to success at the biggest Formula Student event to date at Silverstone last weekend.
UH Racing's Formula Student team, part of the School of Engineering and Technology, came away from the 2011 Formula Student competition as the top UK team and 3rd place overall, the highest ever placing for a UK University. The UH Racing team came behind overall winners Stuttgart and last year's winners TU Munich. This year's competition attracted 109 teams from thirty-four countries.
Dr Howard Ash, senior lecturer, University of Hertfordshire, said: "We set our goals high this year, managing to beat last year by two places, and it is a great achievement for the students to say they are the highest ranking UK team. I give merit to everyone involved, it really is a true testament to the excellent work we do here and showcases the best of UK student talent, and to that end I have several business cards from people after our graduates!"
Formula Student sees teams from across the world design, engineer and manufacture racing models. This year UH Racing made the decision to combine Masters and Undergraduate students to develop a single class one racing model, electing to compete in the combustion class.UH Racing team leader, Clare Cletheroe said: "The UH14 model was not only the best UK contender but performed well in the design, endurance and fuel economy tests. We also won joint first in the business presentation. "It's not over yet, the next race takes place in Germany in just over two weeks and we will be optimising all features of the car in the coming testing weeks in order to win the Formula Student Germany competition."
