(SPEEDWAY 1)SWINDON star Maciej Janowski is looking to go one better than last year in the World Under-21 Championship – and is delighted to be starting his challenge at Poole on Sunday. The Pole finished runner-up in a three-man run-off for the title behind Darcy Ward in 2010, and the 19-year-old says Wimborne Road is one of his favourite circuits ahead of the first of four rounds, after a good performance earlier this season for the Robins.Janowski said: “I scored 14 and Chris Holder managed to get by me in the last heat which prevented us picking up a league point.“I really like the track and the atmosphere and if there was one other track in England – apart from Swindon – where I would like the final to be staged it would be at Poole.”(SPEEDWAY 2)RYAN Fisher scored a paid maximum as Coventry produced a strong performance to defeat Swindon 56-37 and climb two places up the Elite League table.Fisher said: “That will hopefully get the ball rolling and hopefully now we’ll be able to carry it on for Monday (against Poole). It’s definitely been a hard season, but tonight was more what I know I can do.”Elsewhere on Friday, Swedish youngster Kim Nilsson made a stunning debut with 13 (paid 14) for Lakeside in their 40-38 win over Elite League leaders Poole. The match was curtailed due to the weather with two heats to go, with the result standing, and it was a similar situation at Peterborough where a halt was called after Heat 12 with the Panthers emphatic 50-24 winners over Belle Vue.(SPEEDWAY 3)PLYMOUTH received a welcome boost with their second home Premier League win of the season, edging out Redcar 47-43 in a last-heat decider.Maximum man Ben Barker and Jesper Kristiansen got the better of Bears duo Jason Lyons and Aaron Summers for a 5-1 in the crucial Heat 15.Promoter Mike Bowden said: “It was a highly entertaining meeting in which Ben and Jesper were outstanding. Our new signings Ricky Wells and Gino Franchetti played their parts, and I believe we have the makings of a team that can start climbing the table.”Elsewhere, Edinburgh gave one of their best displays of the season to defeat Rye House 55-37 with Andrew Tully and Kalle Katajisto only missing out on maximums to Chris Neath in the last race.(SPEEDWAY 4)NEWCASTLE reserve Kyle Newman produced another bumper haul of points with paid-17 at Somerset in the first leg of their Knockout Cup tie.The home side secured a narrow 46-44 win courtesy of a last-heat 5-1, having been eight points down at one stage, but the Diamonds appear to be in a strong position ahead of Sunday’s second leg.Newcastle boss George English said: “We rode well to lead for most of the meeting and when they started to pressurise us the lads responded well to peg the match to only a two-point defeat.“Whilst many will think we’re in pole position on Sunday, we have to remember they rode our place rather too well for comfort earlier this year in the League. But if Kyle Newman can get another sack-full of points, that will really help our cause.”(SPEEDWAY 5)SCUNTHORPE boss Stuart Parnaby praised Adam Wrathall for his contribution as the club’s National League side overcame a tough challenge from Newport. The Hornets went into a 10-2 lead and were level after seven races, but Wrathall recovered from a disappointing start to play a key role in the 54-39 win, whilst Gary Irving dropped just one point in six rides.Parnaby said: “The turning point really was the 5-1 from the reserves in Heat 10. Adam was really struggling but he produced a great ride with Stefan (Nielsen) and then did even better to round Todd Kurtz when he was on a tactical ride.“If either of those races had gone the other way it would have been completely different. The rest of the side made some great contributions but I’ve got to hand it to Adam for those two rides.”
