(SPEEDWAY 1)JASON Garrity won the British Under-19 Championsip after an eventful night of racing at Rye House.Belle Vue youngster Garrity recovered from a first-race disqualification to qualify for the semi-final, and having won that he headed home Hackney duo Shane Hazelden and Ben Morley in the Final, with Stoke’s James Sarjeant fourth.Garrity said: “I didn’t start off well, locking up in my first ride, but it’s how the night ends that really counts. “Things have been going well for me this year. I had my Elite League debut at Peterborough on Friday, and I learned from that experience, and I was able to come here tonight and show where it’s got me.”(SPEEDWAY 2)RICHARD Lawson picked up the two crucial points Workington needed to secure a narrow Knockout Cup victory over Sheffield in a last-heat decider at Derwent Park. The Tigers required a 5-1 from Heat 15 to level the aggregate scores, but Lawson managed to split Shane Parker and Ricky Ashworth to give the Comets a 91-89 aggregate victory.Workington boss Tony Jackson said: “Richard came up with the goods in the last heat to seal the aggregate victory but they were two cracking meetings and we were pushed all the way by a spirited Tigers side, who were missing Josh Auty following his crash in the first leg. “But it was a real team effort by us over both legs and I can’t praise them all enough for the way that they contributed to the victory. Richard was outstanding once again while Rusty Harrison rode right through the pain barrier for the team tonight. That made all the difference in the end.”Workington will face Newport in the semi-finals, the Wasps having comfortably overcome injury-hit Ipswich at Queensway Meadows.(SPEEDWAY 3)
DARCY Ward lived up to his billing as pre-meeting favourite by winning the first round of the World Under-21 Final at Poole on Sunday. The Australian star, who is going for a third successive overall title, won a three-man run off against Maciej Janowski and Dennis Andersson, and the three riders will therefore go into round two all level on 14 points.Ward said: “It's wide open and the next three rounds are going to be as tough as this one, but no-one said this championship race was going to be easy. “It was good to have the (Poole) fans on my side, they lifted me and I had a great team behind me too. There's nothing in it, but a lot of racing still to come. It’s going to be interesting.”

NEWCASTLE set up a Premier League KO Cup semi-final clash with Glasgow by getting the better of Somerset despite an early scare. The Diamonds saw their two-point first leg deficit increased to six when they conceded a 5-1 in Heat 1, but they hit back to win 53-37 on the night with reserve Kyle Newman recording another impressive haul of 15 (paid 17).Manager George English said: “Early on it looked as if we were going to struggle with the Rebels being rather more handy from the gate than our lads, but come Heat 8 the Diamonds increased their power at the gate and took a far greater control on the meeting than even they could have hoped for.”Glasgow’s own progression was confirmed with a 55-34 win over Berwick which overturned an eight-point first leg deficit, Joe Screen scoring a four-ride maximum for the Tigers.

STOKE kept their unbeaten home run going with a 53-40 win over Belle Vue in the National League, leaving the Potters handily placed with matches in hand.Tim Webster top-scored with 12 points and both Tony Atkin and Simon Lambert were in double-figures too – although No.1 Lambert showed high expectations of himself as he was not satisfied with his personal total.Lambert said: “I should have scored more and I’m disappointed with my performance tonight, ten points is not good enough for a No.1 in my opinion and I’ll be looking to improve on that in our next meeting.“We have a few meetings in hand on the teams above us starting on the Island on Tuesday and it’s a nice big fast track which suits me and we will be going there looking for a win.”

LEWIS Blackbird scored his first full maximum for Mildenhall as the Fen Tigers got the better of Hackney in a highly eventful National League clash at West Row.Blackbird reeled off five straight wins in his side’s 57-35 win which included a bizarre Heat 9 when home duo Joe Jacobs and Daniel Halsey were involved in a crash, with Halsey disqualified and Jacobs unfit to continue.Jacobs’ replacement Cameron Heeps then fell in the re-run leaving just two Hawks riders, with Ben Morley going for double points, and when he suffered mechanical trouble his partner Brandon Freemantle was disqualified for stopping racing to allow Morley to come home in front – leading to an unusual 0-6 race result.Mildenhall captain Jack Hargreaves said: “Everyone chipped in and we deserved to get all three points. We were all worried about Joe and Danny and it was a relief when we knew they hadn't been badly hurt. It was great to see Lewis get a full maximum too.”
