Fifth Podium Of Year For Webster At Incident-Packed Croft
Fortec Motorsport's Josh Webster raced to his fifth podium finish of the 2011 Protyre Formula Renault BARC Championship season at Croft Circuit in North Yorkshire on Sunday, 24th July, to conclude the weekend just a single point away from the top of the driver standings.Arriving at the 2.12-mile track leading the championship after a memorable event at Oulton Park last time out, the Stowmarket 17-year-old's hopes of retaining his advantage looked in tatters following the opening Croft encounter when he was the blameless victim in a first-corner collision. With a seriously damaged car and a race against time for it to be repaired in time for the second of the weekend's two rounds, outstanding work by the Fortec team - with some added assistance from SWB Motorsport's mechanics - enabled Josh to take the grid for the second encounter.Despite missing out on his third win of the year by the narrowest of margins, a mere 0.6 seconds, his determined drive to second place and two bonus points for the fastest race lap mean Josh concludes the fourth race meeting of the campaign with his title aspirations still very much on course."The team did an absolutely amazing job, the guys from SWB came down as well to help out and it was really good to see - I can't thank them enough for getting the car repaired", he said, "In race two, I made a mistake of braking a little bit too early for the first corner at the start but to get fastest lap and second place is great, especially after what happened in the first race!"Round seven qualifying on Saturday, 23rd July, didn't get the weekend off to the best of starts for the Nine Telecom Group, Admiral Group, Integra ICT, Sunwise, Melbek Technology, Everyone Active and Flying Saucer-supported racer when a puncture early in the session prevented a pole position push and he had to settle for the fifth best time.He fully made amends though in the round eight session with a superb lap of 1m21.014 seconds (94.42mph) to re-affirm his true pace and to edge out experienced rival Dino Zamparelli by just 0.020 seconds.Although starting Sunday's first race from the third row of the grid, a podium finish was certainly a distinct possibility for the MSA Academy driver but his involvement came to a dramatic halt just yards from the grid when he was bundled into retirement by Fortec team-mates Archie Hamilton and Kieran Vernon at Clervaux. Vernon made contact with Hamilton as the pair diced over third place but Josh, completely minding his own business on the outside, became the unfortunate third party when the pair cannoned into him causing massive damage to the rear of his FR 2.0 car and to his championship lead.Bitterly disappointed having done nothing wrong, the next three hours were a tense waiting game to see if Josh's car could be repaired to enable he teenager to take-up his pole position starting slot on the round eight grid.Phenomenal work by Fortec enabled that to happen and although losing out to Zamparelli at the first corner, Josh pressured him all the way to the finish. Never much more than a second behind, during the final third of the race Josh closed down Zamparelli's advantage to just 0.6 seconds and also posted the fastest race lap of the weekend with a time of 1m21.440 seconds (93.93mph).There is now a six week break ahead of the next installment of Protyre Formula Renault BARC Championship action with the ninth and 10th rounds of the season taking place on Saturday, 3rd September, at the ultra-fast Thruxton Circuit in Hampshire.Provisional 2011 Protyre Formula Renault BARC Championship Standings (after Rd8):1st Dino Zamparelli, 175pts; 2nd Josh Webster, 174pts
