New Year off to a smashing start at Wimbledon Stadium

Spedeworth International got 2004 off to a smashing start with a four formula race meeting that ensured all thoughts of the New Year's Eve hangover were forgotten as the cars took to the track to deliver a great afternoon's racing on New Year's Day.

The all-action Rookie Bangers got the 2004 season underway with a typically spirited race which once again saw the "light contact" rule go out the window as the drivers dished out the customary spin and barge racing style beloved by Banger fans. First win of 2004 went to 243 Matt Lee.

Superstox star driver Paul Poulter got his new year off to a great start by winning two heats and the final in fine style, despite the rain slicked track making things difficult for the powerful Superstox to compete on.

The rapid 2.0 Hot Rods were also finding the going difficult in their fist outing for 2004, but 113, Stuart Mclaird managed to conquer both the slippery track conditions and the competition to claim an impressive hat trick of heats and final in the non-contact formula.

The Stock Rods were also in action, delivering some very close racing in spite of the less than favourable track conditions. The final was won by 49, James Kent.

The Rookie Bangers returned to put a suitably metal grinding full stop to the evening's racing with a demolition derby. The surviving Bangers tore into each other in the prescribed fashion until 721 Alan Cox battered 317, Tom Saunder's car to scrap metal to take the trophy.

The action for 2004 continues on Sunday January 18th when the Rookie Bangers take to the track in Figure of 8 action, along with Ministox, and Stock Cars.
