The 2004 Silverstone Race to the Sky is recognised internationally as the toughest hillclimb in the world and big names in motorsport are expected to be in the starting line up for the prestigious two-day event at Easter Weekend on April 10 and 11.
Event Promoter Grant Aitken says while a number of high profile competitors, new to the event, have indicated they want to compete, it will be the start of February before they have final confirmation.
"But I can assure motorsport enthusiasts that there will be some class drivers competing creating the usual spectacular action on the Snow Farm Road."
Entries are limited to 100 and there has been a strong early response from competitors, in both the car and bike sections, who want to ensure they book a place in the event.
Reigning King of the Mountain, Nobuhiro (Monster) Tajima of Japan who smashed all existing records when he won the race last year in 8.10.01, is a confirmed starter. Also entered is crowd favourite ex-pat Kiwi Rod Millen who was the 2002 winner. Last year he was runner-up to Tajima.
A contingent of Aussie drivers, including the legendary Ross Dunkerton will create the usual Trans-Tasman rivalry on the hill, while Wellington's Deborah Kibble will fly the flag for women at the race.
Kiwi quad riding personalities Ian Ffitch, Mike Shackleton and 'Rocket' Ron Kirkman are always major drawcards as they battle for top honours with the leading cars in the field.
Last year a rally course competition was included in the event for the first time, designed to encourage new competitors into the event, including novice drivers. This section is expected to be popular again amongst rally competitors.
Spectators will be well catered for with the traditional large screen providing live footage of action on the hill throughout the Silverstone Race to the Sky.
Practice day will be held on Saturday April 10 with competition throughout Sunday April 11 culminating in the Race to the Sky and the crowning of the 2004 champion.
The 2004 Silverstone Race to the Sky is scheduled for Easter Weekend, April 10 and 11 at The Snow Farm in the Cardrona Valley, close to Queenstown and Wanaka.
Gates open from 7.30am on both Easter Saturday and Sunday. Gate admission is $35 per adult, child under 14 free, Gold Pass $160.
