Spedeworth International brightened up a very wet and miserable Sunday Night at Wimbledon Stadium on Feb 1st when the Reliant Robins took to the track to contest the Capital Trophy.
The combination of a rain-slicked track and the world famous "handling ability" of the Robin ensured that there were plenty of rollovers and general mayhem as the three-wheeled "plastic pigs" attempted to get around the tight Plough Lane Stadium. Amazingly, 121, Paul Smith managed to win two heats but was denied the final when he rolled over on the scoreboard bend.
The serious racing was supplied by the Hot Rods racing in the London Open. In the Class A section 280, Chris Ayling took good advantage of drying track conditions to take the win ahead of his brother 28, Ross Ayling and 121 Colin Crocker.
In the hotly contested Group B section it was a splendid night for 112 Charlie Schembri, who took both heats and then went on to crown a great nights racing with a win in the London Open. Right on his bumper was 96, Kevin Randell, followed by an equally hard charging 444 Sammy Shudall.
The Lightning Rods braved the extremely wet and difficult track conditions to deliver a night's action packed racing culminating in a 30 lap final which saw 516, Tony Bates lead the pack home to a deserving win ahead of 305, Gavin Botfield and 565, Daniel Smith.
