New Zealand motorsport hero Greg Murphy has entered to compete for the first time at the 2004 Silverstone Race to the Sky on April 10 and 11.
A Holden Commodore Ute is being purpose built in Australia for Greg to enter in the event. Campaign Coordinator, Dave Schneiders says the vehicle build is underway with fit out of all required safety gear.
“Greg wants to come over and support the event and have some fun. This car won’t be an outright contender but the idea is to possibly compete in the future in the open class.”
“He would really love to compete in front of a home crowd at the Race to the Sky, and has been trying to get there for a few years, but hasn’t been able to get the right vehicle. Queenstown is also one of his top favourite holiday destinations in the world.”
Murphy competed successfully in the V8 Ute Challenge at Telstra Rally Australia in Perth last year. Given his driving style and commitment in that event, he will undoubtedly be a hit with the spectators at the Race to the Sky in his SS 5.7litre, 6-speed manual Holden which will compete in the Open Utility Two Wheel Drive Class.
“He did really well and had a ball,” says Dave. “Someone who drives on tar seal all the time has to be neat and tidy. To let him get in a V8 Ute that he can chuck sideways and have fun in is something else.”
Silverstone Race to the Sky promoter Grant Aitken says Greg Murphy’s appearance will obviously be a coup for the event.
“To have someone of his calibre and profile competing is bound to be a draw card and we are delighted that Greg and his team are likely to be here for this year’s race and others in the future.”
The 2004 Silverstone Race to the Sky is scheduled for Easter Weekend, April 10 and 11 at The Snow Farm in the Cardrona Valley, between Queenstown and Wanaka.
Gates open from 7.00am on both Easter Saturday and Sunday. Gate admission is $35 per adult, child under 14 free, Gold Pass $160
