Pirtek Racings Andrew Jordan won the final BTCC race of the day at Oulton Park after a truly pulsating 15-laps of racing.
Jordans team-mate Jeff Smith spun away the lead with just three laps remaining, which also allowed Colin Turkington through in his eBay Motors BMW and the Ciceley Racing Toyota of Adam Morgan to complete the podiumMorgans first in his BTCC career.
It was WIX Racing's Rob Austin who made a blistering getaway from the second row of the grid, storming by Smith and the Proton of Daniel Welch to take the lead. There was early action further down the order when Speedworks Motorsport driver Ollie Jackson spun out at Knickerbrook. He recovered back to the circuit but found himself at the back of the pack.
Eyes were immediately drawn back to the front, however, as Austin and Smith touched on a number of occasions while battling for the lead. Austin held on initially but Smith eventually made a move stick after yet more contact at the exit of Lodge.
Star of the weekend so far Jason Plato endured misery on lap four when his MG6 dramatically caught fire, forcing him to bring his car down the pitlane and into immediate retirement.
Back on track and the Honda Yuasa Racing pair of Matt Neal and Gordon Shedden were duelling it out for fifth. Neal sneaked by his team-mate at Old Hall on lap five, before Shedden pitted after collecting damage from the spinning Toyota Avensis of Dave Newsham. Neal was lucky to continue after out-braking himself into Knickerbrook, which launched his Honda Civic up on two wheels after contact with Turkington.
Welch defended admirably in the earlymaintaining third position in the processbut he was eventually shuffled down the order and retired with his own mechanical woes after seven laps.
Meanwhile at the front Jordan made his own manoeuvre by Austin, and he was quickly followed by Turkington. The experienced pair then set about attacking Smith ahead of them who briefly held a near two-second advantage. That lead evaporated, however, and Smiths aforementioned spin was followed by another, which left him way down the order in 18th.
Morgans third place and maiden podium seemed in doubt late on as Neal closed in. They went side-by-side exiting Lodge for the final time but Morgan clung by just 0.078s. Neal had to settle for fourth and the championship lead as his reward.
The two Audi A4s from the Rob Austin Racing stable deserve huge credit as Austin led home his team-mate Will Bratt in fifth and sixth respectively. Bratt kept his nose clean while chaos occurred all around him and the top six finish is his best BTCC result to date. Similarly MGs Sam Tordoff stayed out of trouble to storm from the back of the grid to take seventh, ahead of Nick Fosters BMW 125i M Sport.
Frank Wrathall finished ninth but could have scored a higher result but for running wide at Lodge at the mid-distance stage, which lost him a gaggle of places. Airwaves Racings Aron Smith rounded out the top ten ahead of eBay Motors Rob Collard. Tom Onslow-Cole was battling with Wrathall and those behind but an off at Cascades on the penultimate lap put his VW Passat out of contention.
Liam Griffin romped to a comfortable win in the Jack Sears Trophy after his main rival Lea Wood retired from the lead due to problems with Vauxhall Vectra.
