DAN MAKES IT A ROUND DOZENJayde Kruger, Camren Kaminsky and Harrison Scott the other podium finishers in Cheshire
Dan Cammish edged ever closer to the Formula Ford record for consecutive race victories Sunday at Oulton Park, the JTR Mygale driver clocking up his 11th and 12th wins in the 2013 Dunlop MSA Formula Ford Championship of Great Britain. One more victory and Dan will equal Scott Malverns tally of wins-in-a-row, set in 2011.
He claimed win number 11 in eventful style after losing out at the start to Harrison Scott, who was subsequently penalised, and in round 12 made it a pole-to-chequered flag victory after a lightning grid getaway.
Round 11 provided a first for the 2013 championship with Cammish failing to lead the early stages of the race. The championship leader prevailed in the end, however, to secure his 11th straight victory for the JTR team.
It was Harrison Scott who laid down the challenge at the start, the 17-year-old Falcon Motorsport racer getting a flying start from second on the grid to overhaul pole man Cammish into Old Hall Corner. Alas for Harrison, the startline judges ruled that he had anticipated the lights and slapped him with a drive-through penalty.
It was some time before Scott made his imposed pit visit, however, and that made for a superb four-lap battle between Harrison, Dan and championship newcomer Jayde Kruger (Jamun). Despite not having followed another car all year, Cammish quickly adapted to his situation and put Scott under severe pressure. At the start of lap two he lunged for the lead into Old Hall and ran side by side with Scott down the Avenue before Harrison shook off his pursuer into Cascades.
Kruger soon made up for a slowish getaway to join the battle and made a bold attempt to wrest second from Cammish at the hairpin on lap three. Dan covered the move, however, and was soon able to pull clear of his challenger as Scott made his stop. By the end of the fifth lap Cammish was 1.3s clear and Dan extended that advantage to 3.1s by the flag.
At first I didnt realise Harrison had jumped the start, said Cammish. I got an OK start and was worried about how hed managed to get a so much better one. From then on I was right under his rear wing and Kruger was right under mine for a while. Harrison was going to make me work for that one; it wouldnt have been an easy pass on him but it would have been a long race for him with me under his rear wing.
Kruger was more than pleased with second: Weve made big strides since we got here on Friday for testing. Well get there.
A second-lap sort-out at the hairpin saw Andy Richardson bumped into a spin by Juan Rosso, an incident which ended the Argentinians race on the spot. The crash played into the hands of Camren Kaminsky, who gained four places and then inherited third when Scott was penalised. The American JTR driver was delighted to return to the podium for the first time since Brands Hatch at the start of the season: I think my turbo was giving trouble towards the end so it was a relief to see the flag. Im pleased to be back and hoping that my run of bad luck is broken.
Kaminsky had had to hold off a late challenge from fourth-placed (and Scholarship class winner) Sam Brabham, who was followed home by Scott and James Abbotts Radical Motorsport Mygale. Richardsons run was ended after 11 laps with a sticking throttle.
In Round 12, Cammish made an impeccable start to establish an early lead and by half distance was more than six seconds ahead of the pursuing Harrison Scott. Scott made a good start too but, mindful of his jump-start penalty in round 11, was ultra-careful this time.
Cammish was delighted to have racked up a dozen wins already in the Dunlop MSA Formula Ford Championship of Great Britain: I got a great start. Ive done a few not-so-great starts in a row so I was determined, and my God I shot off. Of Malverns record, Cammish added: It would be great to equal it and even better to beat it, but thats a hell of a run. Well see.
Cammish, Scott and Jamuns Jayde Kruger held the top three positions throughout the race, Jamuns new South African signing finishing 1.6s behind Scott after a long battle. Harrison was pleased to have put his first-race accident and race two penalty behind him with second and the Scholarship class win: That makes up for things a bit. The other two races were a disappointment and to finish the weekend with that result makes me happy.
The battle of the race was between Andy Richardson, Sam Brabham and Camren Kaminsky for fourth. They circulated as one for the duration and the squabble was decided only in the final minutes when Brabham ran wide at Lodge on the penultimate lap. Kaminsky jumped his JTR team-mate for fifth but was unable to carry on the momentum to tackle Richardson.
James Abbot was seventh in his new Mygale, ahead of Jamuns Argentinian drivers Juan Rosso and Nico Maranzana.
