Jordan and Pirtek Racing win Oulton Park thriller

Andrew Jordan and his Pirtek Racing Honda Civic claimed a sensational victory in round 12 of the Dunlop MSA British Touring Car Championship at Oulton Park (9 June) in the most exciting race of the season to date. The result puts Andrew second overall in the drivers standings after a day of high drama in front of a huge crowd at the Cheshire track. In Saturdays qualifying session Andrew felt the effect of the weight penalty he was carrying and posted fifth best time, six-tenths of a second slower than the pole time set by Jason Plato. The extra weight was slowing the car on the uphill climb from the tight Island Hairpin, but Andrew was still upbeat. I think we should have been able to qualify third, but we didnt quite get it all together, he said. With the circuit packed with more than 30,000 fans, Andrew raced to fourth place in the opening race despite a problem with the exhaust that was creating smoke from the back of the car. He then took fifth in race two to score more good points, but it was not the level of result he really wanted. After race two I didnt think the day was going too well, with a fourth and a fifth and the cars handling wasnt where we wanted it, he said. But it all changed in a high-drama race three as a huge pack of cars fought for the lead and Andrew tigered through from sixth on the grid to join team mate Jeff Smith at the head of the field. Jeff had driven superbly to take the lead and over the second half of the race the two Pirtek cars ran in a magnificent one-two.I had to bide my time to some extent in the first few laps because it was all kicking off: I thought maybe a third was on the cards, said Andrew. I had to make quick progress and when I got on to someone I had to get buy them and keep the pace going. The car was really, really good and it was a shame we couldnt get a one-two. Unfortunately Jeff lost the back into Knickerbrook and it went round. That was a great shame for him. Jeff later resumed, but was well out of contention after a mighty performance. From our point of view, Jason Plato and Gordon Shedden had bad ones in that last race, so it has been a good day, said Andrew. Weve come out of it joint top points scorer and were right up there in the championship. I said before the first race that if we could come away with three top sixes, it would be okay, with the weight we had on. To get a win was a nice surprise. Weve closed the gap to Matt Neal from 13 points to four!
