Leeds driver races on home ground this weekend as he bids to extend his advantage for JTRThree new guest drivers join the grid for Croft races
With 12 straight wins under his belt, Dunlop MSA Formula Ford Championship leader Dan Cammish has little need of any additional advantage, but a home match this weekend (22/23 June) at the Croft circuit in North Yorkshire could provide an extra boost to his bid to claim a modern-era record.
The Leeds driver is one victory shy of equalling Scott Malverns 2011 record of 13 consecutive Formula Ford race wins but the 25-year-old JTR Mygale driver says he is putting that out of his mind. I dont really want to think about, says Cammish. If I beat it fantastic, if I dont then I have still had a hell of a run. I didnt come into Formula Ford to try to break records - I just want to win some races and the championship. Well see; you can never predict what will happen on a race day.
Dans experience of his home circuit is limited to a single race appearance there in 2011. I like Croft, he said. Its good in sections, fast and flowing; its a bit different. He arrives at the track with a 133-point advantage over his closest title rival, Jamuns Nico Maranzana. Both Dans and Nicos 1.6-litre EcoBoost engines were stripped and checked by Ford technicians following the Oulton Park rounds and were found to comply fully with championship technical regulations.
Maranzana and Falcon Motorsports Harrison Scott are locked in combat for overall championship second and also for the lead of the Scholarship class for junior drivers, with Argentinas Maranzana holding a slender points advantage following Oultons races.
The championship top six is completed by Radical Motorsports James Abbott, Cammishs JTR team-mate Camren Kaminsky and Jamuns Juan Rosso. JTR man Sam Brabham and Richardson Racings Andy Richardson are battling to break into the top half dozen.
The Croft grid will be complemented by the addition of three guest drivers trying the new EcoBoost Formula Ford 200 for the first time. They are Croft-based circuit-racing novice Robert Shield, who will drive one of SWB Motorsports Sinter chassis; Sam MacLeod, who graduated from karting into the club Formula Renault series this season and who will race with the Jamun team; and Hong Kong-born Wei Fung (Shaun) Thong, who will join the Falcon Motorsport team for Croft having enjoyed success in saloons, sports cars and single-seaters in Asia.
Formula Fords Croft weekend gets underway with two test sessions on Friday followed by qualifying and two races on Saturday. Sunday afternoons race will be televised live on ITV4.
