F4 Lead For Robertson Despite Contentious Exclusion

Racecar client Charlie Robertson moved to the top of the BRDC Formula 4 Championship driver standings at Snetterton 300 Circuit over the weekend, 15th/16th June, despite a highly contentious exclusion from the third racein which he had claimed his second victory of the season. After racing to an excellent second place finish in round seven at the Norfolk track on Saturday, where he also posted the fastest lap of the race, the HHC Motorsport driver went on to add fifth position in round eight on Sunday before scorching to a superb lights-to-flag win in round nine.Following the final encounter of the weekend though, a gurney flap on the rear wing of the Whyteleafe racers car was deemed to be not mounted as per the technical manual and so he, and also team-mate Raoul Hyman, were expunged from first and second in the race results. The basis for the exclusion centres on a 10mm aluminium strip which, although to the correct specification and mounted in the correct place, was not attached with the specified nuts and bolts. Despite offering no performance advantage, this was deemed non-compliant by officials. Charlie and HHC, therefore, believe the exclusion to be heavily disproportionate.Im absolutely gutted to have lost the win but the guys at the team have lodged an appeal so well see what happens with that, said the 16-year-old, It was a fantastic weekend up to that point, we took two more podiums and my second win of the season. Even with the exclusion were leading the championship, so thats the important thing, but were really disappointed with the ruling.Charlies weekend began with the second quickest time in pre-event practice on Friday, 14th June, before setting the fifth fastest lap in the rain-hit qualifying session on Saturday morningmissing pole position for round seven by just 0.163 seconds. While pole-sitter Jake Dalton was unable to get away from the grid due to a driveshaft failure, Investigo-backed Charlie made a good start and managed to avoid the stricken car to assume fourth place before going on the attack to close down former Ginetta Junior rival Seb Morris.Posting the fastest lap on the second tour, Charlies intentions were clear and he began to pile on the pressure. Profiting from a mistake for second placed Matt Bell on lap three, who slipped down the order, he grabbed third and then took second from Morris on the fifth tour.Closing down the leader during the final few laps, posting what would go on to be the fastest race lap of the weekend, earning Charlie the BRM Rapide Award, he took the flag just two seconds shy to claim his fourth podium of the season and take the series lead.Beginning Sunday mornings eighth round from seventh on the grid, the Surrey teenager rocketed into the top four but the action was halted soon after due to a multi-car accident at the exit of the first corner. When racing finally resumed, over a shorter distance of eight laps, Charlie held fifth through Riches for the first time and although slipping to sixth he quickly regained the position. In round nine, prior to learning of his exclusion, Charlie was elated to have claimed his second win of 2013 after a truly outstanding performance. Earning pole position by way of having set the fastest lap time of the weekend up to that point, the Caterham School pupil made an excellent start and was never headed throughout the 10 lapswinning by 3.5 seconds and again posting the fastest lap.Oulton Park in Cheshire will host the next three rounds of BRDC Formula 4 Championship action on Saturday, 6th July, as part of a one-day race meeting. In the meantime, Charlie and HHC Motorsport await the outcome of their appeal against the round nine exclusion.Provisional 2013 BRDC Formula 4 Championship Standings (after Rd9):1st Charlie Robertson, 164pts
