Nick Mancuso Soldiers Through a Status Quo Weekend at Mid Ohio
Sometimes there's nothing to do with a particular race weekend except soldier through it, don't bend the car, don't give up any spots on track; just score some points, learn what you can and get ready for the next one. While no driver or team likes that kind of weekend, they come along from time to time, and this time it was Nick Mancuso's turn at the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course in Lexington, Ohio. In Round 5 of the 2013 Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge. On the heels of his first-ever podium finish in Round 4 at Road Atlanta, an excellent team test several days earlier at Watkins Glen and his first opportunity to test a DP car with the Starworks team, Mancuso arrived at Mid-Ohio full of optimism."Everything was great going into the weekend, and the weekend itself wasn't bad, we just weren't fast," he says ruefully. "You need a good-handling car at Mid-Ohio, but its a tough place to pass and you need a horsepower advantage. We had the handling, but were shy just a few horsepower, so we qualified 13th and finished 13th a status quo weekend. It's possible we should have changed the car more between qualifying and the race, because the grip level was quite a bit less when the green flag dropped. But you can trap yourself chasing the track with your setup, so we decided to go with what we knew worked and from that point on it was our job to bring the car home as high up in the order as it was capable of. In that sense, at least, it was mission accomplished since we were the only one of the Aston Martins to finish where we started; everyone else went backward. But I'm sure glad Watkins Glen is next on the schedule because we know we're fast there and can battle for another podium."With a top-5 finish in the seasonopener at Daytona, an unfortunate DNS in Round 2 at Circuit of the Americas (due to a technical problem with the car), a top-10 in Round 3 at Barber Motorsports Park and a podium at Round 4, Mancuso and his co-driver Frankie Montecalvo are in the middle of an up-and-down rookie season in the GS class, but confident their form will improve in coming events at tracks more well-suited to their car. The Multimatic Motorsports team, which campaigns a quartet of Aston Martins in the GS class, is tied with Chevrolet for 2nd in the manufacturer's championship. The Mid Ohio race will air on SPEED Saturday, June 23 at 4:00 pm ET. Round 6 of the Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge will take place June 29th, on the long course at Watkins Glen International.
