Yorkshire date for WWRS R.A.C. Rally Championship

The Trackrod Historic and Pre ’87 Cup (27/28 September) marks the final round of the inaugural West Wales Rally Spares R.A.C. Rally Championship and another fabulous entry of many of the quickest drivers in historic rallying will deliver a mighty spectacle over the famous Yorkshire stages. The Roger Albert Clark Rally Motor Club has developed the R.A.C. Championship, which focuses on historic rally cars complying with MSA historic regulations. But, significantly, it is also opening up the chance for the next generation of cars to join the historic fraternity. The 2013 championship has run over six one-day gravel rallies in England, Scotland and Wales. The championship caters for cars from MSA historic Categories One, Two and Three as well as cars prepared to FIA Appendix K. Additional classes accommodate cars built up to the end of 1986 as well as other pre ’87 cars that do not fully comply with historic regulations.Three weeks ago in Wales on the Red Kite Stages, the 2013 R.A.C. title was settled by Marty McCormack and Phil Clarke after a mighty campaign in their Ford Escort Mk2. That was their fourth win from five events and put them beyond the reach of their rivals after a season of stunning speed in the Rob Smith Rallying Series 3.With McCormack electing to miss the Trackrod, Matt Edwards and Elliott Edmondson could set the R.A.C, pace and they are certainly due some good fortune in their Ford Escort Mk2.Of course, there are plenty more spectacular Escort Mk2s packing out the entry, including flying Welshman Tomas Davies and local aces Warren Philliskirk and Tim Pearcey, along with drivers like James Potter, Will Nicholls and rallying twins Phil and Mick Squires. The brothers recently contested their 200th rally in their faithful Mk2 and are now building up to tackling their 10th Roger Albert Clark Rally in the car. The wonderful Vauxhall Chevette of Pickering’s Steve Magson and Geoff Atkinson offers welcome variety in category three while in class D3, for the Pinto-powered Escort Mk2s, Ben Mellors and Alex Lee are setting some stunning stage times as they get up among the BDG-engined Escorts. Another impressive young crew leading the chase of Mellors is Ben Friend and Jonathan Jackson in their Escort. In the Capital Construction Series 2 (1968-74), the crew likely to set the overall pace is Richard Hill and Patrick Cooper in their Escort Mk1, who make a welcome return to the R.A.C. Championship after missing a couple of rounds. Their opposition will be headed by the similar cars of Chris Browne and Ali Cornwell-Browne and Barry Jordan/James Gratton-Smith. Two fabulous cars will line up in class C4: the sensational Lancia Stratos of Steve Perez/Paul Spooner and the mighty Porsche 911 of Yorkshireman Tom Mason and Graham Wild. However, in terms of the title race in series two it is the BMW 2002 of Terry Cree/Richard Shores that is currently the car to beat after a mega season, though the 2-litre Pinto-powered Escort Mk1s of Dick Slaughter/Geoff Dearing and David Kirby/Chris Rixon are chasing hard. Look out, too, for young Ash Slights in a Mk1 Escort as he has bags of talent. In class C2, the Ford Escort Mk1s of Vince Bristow/Tim Sayer and Robin Shuttleworth/Ron Roughead head class C2, and will run first on the road along with the pre ’68 cars in the Walker Diecastings Series 1.Amon the pre ’68 cars the top championship contenders are locals John Everard and Mark Sharpley in the gorgeous Alfa Romeo Junior GT. Their rivals include Pete Gunson/Jonny Haynes in their Lotus Cortina and the wonderful two-stroke Saab 96 of Stephen Higgins and Richard Simpson. The Trackrod is a fitting final round for the 2013 West Wales Rally Spares R.A.C. Rally Championship, taking contenders into stages that have a place in rallying folklore. The sight and sound of these cars in stages like Dalby will be a highlight of this first class rally, with some of the action taking place in darkness on Friday evening. The Trackrod Historic Cup is organised by the Trackrod Motor Club.
