Dramatic Carrera Cup Grandstand Finish Secures Daniel Lloyd Ninth Podium

Daniel Lloyd secured his ninth podium of the 2013 Porsche Carrera Cup GB Championship season at Silverstone on Sunday, 29th September, following a sensational grandstand finish to the first of the weekend’s two races – the Huddersfield driver taking second place by a mere 0.021 seconds.Beginning round 17 from second on the grid, the Porsche Carrera Cup GB Scholar made a fantastic getaway from the line to move alongside pole position starter Michael Meadows on the run to Copse. With the inside line for the first right-hander, Daniel grabbed the lead and immediately tried to break away from the chasing pack.Ending lap one 0.7 seconds clear of Meadows, the Team Parker Racing driver increased his cushion to almost one second by the start of lap three but the championship leader then began to mount a charge of his own.On lap six, Meadows managed to get ahead but Daniel stuck with him for several laps before then having to turn his attention to the advancing Dean Stoneman and Rory Butcher. Managing to remain two seconds clear of his pursuers for the bulk of the encounter, into the closing stages Daniel began to be caught by third placed Butcher and into the final lap the Scotsman prepared an attack.Heading into the penultimate corner, Luffield, Butcher managed to squeeze alongside Daniel’s car on the inside line but the West Yorkshireman wasn’t to be denied and boldly kept his foot planted on the accelerator around the outside.Running door-to-door out of the turn and into the right-hand kink at Woodcote, Daniel managed to carry enough pace – even though on the outside, inches from the gravel – and just managed to take second place on the line in a true photo finish.“It was a great race”, said the 21-year-old, “I made a fantastic start off the line, straight into the lead, and I was really pleased with the first couple of laps. I got a bit of a gap but it was clear Michael was quicker than me, so I wasn’t going to put up too much of a fight as it would back us into the others.“I tried going with him but towards the end Rory [Butcher] caught me, he had really good pace. At Luffield on the last lap, he got inside and it was neck and neck all the way through. It felt like I was going towards the Grandstand around the outside but I just beat him by two thousandths. It looked like he had it, but I didn’t give up and kept my foot in. It was a great finish, I’m pleased with second.”In round 18 later in the day, the second year Porsche racer lined-up fourth on the grid but was edged back to fifth on the opening lap. With the upper order remaining unchanged throughout the 28-lap duration, Daniel concluded the contest in fifth but almost 16 seconds clear of his closest pursuer.Cheered on by more than 50 guests this weekend during the penultimate event of the Porsche Carrera Cup GB season, Daniel now heads into the championship finale next month fourth in the standings and within 15 points of the coveted top three. Brands Hatch Grand Prix Circuit in Kent will host rounds 19 and 20 over the weekend 12th/13th October.Visit www.daniellloydracing.com for all the latest news and follow him on Twitter @Daniellloyd232013 Porsche Carrera Cup GB Championship Standings (after Rd18):4th Daniel Lloyd, 215pts
