Giovanni Berton assess 2013 SUPERSTARS season

THE VENETO-BASED MAN, DRIVING A BMW M3 FOR TEAM BMW DINAMIC, ENDED UP AS A RUNNER-UP IN THE 2013 SUPERSTARS INTERNATIONAL SERIES

SUPERSTARS welcomed a brand-new star this season as Giovanni Berton, at his second year in the SWR-promoted series, ended up as a runner up in the International Series at the end of an exciting season where he scored points in every round. The 1981-born Veneto man took full advantage of Team BMW Dinamic’s experience, and scored three wins this season on his BMW M3. The first one came in Race 2 at Brno, followed by another Race 2 success at Slovakia Ring and by a masterful win in front of 26.000 fans at Vallelunga, starting from his maiden pole. He also ended up onto the podium four more times and capturing the points that eventually enabled to finish the season in front of the two works Mercedes racecars of Vitantonio Liuzzi and Thomas Biagi.

If you could describe your season in two words, which ones would you choose?

Surprising and outstanding. I started aware the available means which were a perfect team and a more-than-reliable car. On the other hand, the opponents to face were incredibly fierce and some of them much more experienced of me like the ex-F1 Liuzzi e Morbidelli. We didn’t get frightened, raced as hard as we could and that eventually paid its dividends.

How is your relationship with Team BMW Dinamic?

After Vallelunga in 2012 I realized that we could do extremely well together. Plus, the chemistry with my team has been sensational. I also merged well with the mechanics and engineers and that fact kept us competitive throughout the season.

Regarding the car, how was your feel with the M3?

The M3 is truly a perfect car. The development process carried-on throughout the years made it excellent in terms of performance and reliability. It’s most competitive on the mid-to-fast tracks, even if it lacks a little horsepowers compared to the other cars. It compensates with the cornering speed though. I’m very fond of my #4. Before leaving the track at night I always say goodnight to her!

What is the track where you had more fun?

Definitely Brno and Slovakia Ring because we cruised to victory and also defeated the early expectations. It’s a pity for Portimao, a wonderful track, where we had ECU problems all the times and we couldn’t fight for the win.

How do you see your future?

In SUPERSTARS again, I hope. We’re working on this program. Now I think I’ll be training with some rallying and go-kart. I have to admit I still have a dream I want to make true. I’d love to win the BMW Sports Trophy Award and test a DTM car. I’m crossing my fingers!
