motorsport news,Historic Championship Victory for Honda Zytek ERS

Honda CR-Z GT Hybrid of Team Mugen with Zytek ERS, secures historic championship victory this weekend, following a second place at Motegi, Japan.

The Honda CR-Z GT Hybrid of Team Mugen finished 2nd in the final Super GT championship race at Motegi Japan 3rd November 2013. This result sealed a championship win for the team, which is believed to be the first Battery Hybrid Race car to win a championship (excluding Formula 1 KERS).

This remarkable achievement was accomplished utilising the Zytek ZPH1 Energy Recovery System, which is only in its first full racing season. The 50-kilowatt system, which has been developed in association with Honda by UK Midlands-based company-Zytek, is a full-hybrid system. Unlike F1 KERS which can be used for only 7seconds in each lap, the full hybrid ERS can be used for a much longer duration. It is just one member of the Zytek family of energy recovery systems, as well as the first to race in a number of on-going projects between Zytek and Honda that are concerned with ERS and other areas.

Zytek’s Programme Manager, Pete May commented ‘This is the result of a great deal of hard work, over several years, involving a large number of Zytek staff. The ERS’s record is impressive with the system fitted on both the Mugen and ARTA CR-Z’s never having experienced a failure or problem causing any loss of track time during a race or test event throughout the whole season. The performance advantage which the system gave the cars made a real contribution to their success with the CR-Z taking wins in 3 of the 9 races and finishing on the podium no fewer than 7 times. We are all very proud of our contribution to this championship victory and congratulate Team Mugen and Honda on their historic achievement.’
