Motors TV Weekend Highlights 7,8 December

While winter grips Europe, those fortunate enough to inhabit Australia are bathed in glorious early summer sunshine, which would make us jealous if it weren’t for the fact they don’t get to watch Motors TV.That said, this weekend’s headline act on the High Speed Television Channel comes from Down Under, where the V8 Supercars championship is preparing for its final round of 2013. Four drivers retain a title shot, but in truth this should be a face-off between Triple Eight team-mates Jamie Whincup and Craig Lowndes. The former currently tops the standings, putting him in the box seat for a fifth title in six seasons, an achievement that would place him level with Australian touring car legend Mark Skaife. Lowndes meanwhile is looking to secure a fourth crown, 14 years after he last topped the standings in 1999. Since then the Melbourne native has finished as series runner-up on four occasions – can he finally break his 21st century jinx? The outside bet for the title is Ford racer Mark ‘Frosty’ Winterbottom, who enters the finale needing a poor showing from the Triple Eight boys if he’s to snatch the crown. He still has it easier than departing team-mate Will Davison however, who’ll need nothing short of a miracle if he’s capture the championship before switching to the Erebus-Mercedes squad. Not that anything should be ruled out in this must-see double-header event. While live V8 Supercars are the main attraction this weekend there's still plenty more to look forward to, not least another raft of season review shows. In the revived and rejuvenated European F3 Championship, pre-season talk was of a fierce title scrap between Raffaele Marciello and Felix Rosenqvist – and that's exactly what we got. The advantage swung between the two all season long, culminating in a winner-takes-all final round. In the FIA GT Series it was the WRT Audi squad who prevailed – and in dominant fashion. They travelled to the season finale in Baku with the team's championship very much wrapped up and their driver pairings disputing the title.2012 also saw FIA GT treated to a season of Sebastien Loeb, who undertook his first full-time campaign in a circuit racing championship, while billionaire aristocrat Albert von Thurn und Taxis added a touch of Germanic nobility missing from most series. And in the European Truck Racing Championship , where the tricked-out juggernauts can rival a Porsche 911 for pace, Jochen Hahn and Antonio Albacete engaged in an almighty battle as both went in pursuit of their third series title. Be sure to catch our re-cap of that. We've also got action from the maiden event at the new Highlands Park facility on New Zealand’s spectacular South Island, the X-CAT World Series contest in the UAE and even a bit of RC Racing.
