Strong Points Haul Moves Caygill Into VW Cup Top Three‏

Second year saloon car racer Josh Caygill delivered yet another consistent points scoring outing at Silverstone Grand Prix Circuit on Sunday, 1st June, to climb into the coveted championship top three in the Milltek Sport Volkswagen Racing Cup.In addition to fifth and sixth place finishes in the weekend’s two encounters, the Netherton driver confirmed his excellent race pace with the second fastest lap in the opening contest, round five, and he then went on to lead a VW Cup race for the first time in round six.“I’ve never led a race in this championship before this weekend, so it’s been good and a definite step forward in many ways”, said the ex-motorcycle racer, “We’re definitely close to the leaders, we’re making good progress and that’s what it’s all about at this stage.”Despite being limited to only two genuine ‘hot laps’ in qualifying after problems with traffic, Caygill still managed to put his Volkswagen Scirocco on the fourth row of the grid for race one – just 0.4 seconds shy of the time managed by reigning champion and AWM team-mate Aaron Mason.Managing to avoid getting caught-up in any major contact on a robust first lap, Caygill slipped to ninth place but following a short Safety Car period the 24-year-old was able to move back into the top eight. On lap five, though, he was delayed at Copse when Jack Walker-Tully tried to slingshot past both Caygill and David Sutton in one audacious late-braking move.Resulting in a total loss of momentum out of the turn for Caygill after he was forced to get off the throttle, fortunately he didn’t lose any significant ground and on lap seven posted his best lap of the race, the second fastest of all, with a time of 2m23.960 seconds.Going into the final tour in eighth position, at the back of a five car queue behind third placed Sam Morgan, Caygill was able to work his way through into the top five to secure his second highest finish of the season so far.“I was happy enough with where we ended up in qualifying, at least two and possibly three laps were wrecked by other drivers so we could have been higher up”, he commented, “The first lap in race one was carnage, nothing major but a lot of contact and then it settled down more. Putting in the second fastest lap was good, it shows the pace and that we’re moving forward all the time.”Starting the ‘reverse grid’ second race from the front row of the grid, his highest starting position yet in the VW Racing Cup, Caygill got away from the line well and opened an early lead of 0.7 seconds over Stefan Di Resta, the younger brother of ex-Formula One racer Paul Di Resta.Despite the great start, Caygill noticed a significant lack of power on the straights and he became a sitting duck as he was elbowed down to fourth on the second tour. Embroiled in a tight battle with Lucas Orrock mid-race, contact from the KPM Racing driver at the complex delayed Caygill but he was able to battle back into sixth by the finish.“Leading the first lap was good and when [Stefan] Di Resta came past I wasn’t too bothered as I was happy to follow him, but we just seemed to struggle with the car”, he explained, “We weren’t fast at all on the straights, we were a long way down on the speed traps, so we’re not sure if there might be a problem with the turbo or something.“Halfway through I was battling with [Lucas] Orrock and I gave him room at the complex but he understeered into me and nudged me off the track. Then, as he tried to make the apex at the next left hander where my car was, he hit me again causing a fair bit of damage. That lost me all of my momentum onto the back straight, so [Joe] Fulbrook and [Tony] Gilham went by. I passed Gilham though on the last lap at Brooklands, so that was alright.”Next on the VW Racing Cup schedule is a visit to Snetterton 300 Circuit in Norfolk three weeks from now, over the weekend 21st/22nd June.Visit www.joshcaygill.com for all the latest news and follow him on Twitter @Joshracer14Provisional 2014 Milltek Sport Volkswagen Racing Cup Driver Standings (after Rd6):3rd Josh Caygill, 156pts
