ADD Motorsports driver Lando Norris moved to joint top in the CIK FIA European KF Championship – despite admitting to not being at his best.
The 14-year-old was disappointed to only finish fifth in the final after some powerful performances in the second round at Zuera.
But a fifth here and third place finish in the previous round was all he needed to clock up 44 points and go level with Nicklas Nielsen at the top.
And just a year after taking the title at junior level, Lando is proving the step up is not a daunting him with some consistently high performances.
He said: “It was an OK performance, but I struggled for pace on the new tyres, I was much quicker on the old.
“We were good in the pre-final and on that pace, I would have deserved a podium, but on the final performance I probably didn’t.
“I definitely felt I could be better, but to come fifth is still really good.”
Lando was second in his qualifying group and fourth overall which set him up nicely for the weekend.
He started second in Heat 1, fell back to fifth and managed to get back to third and was close to catching up with second place by the end.
He started Heat 2 in second as well, again falling back to early on, this time to sixth. He overtook a few drivers before making a few mistakes and ending up in 13th.
He also began Heat 3 in second, but this time got a much better start, pulling away, getting a gap and keeping it for the whole race to finish first.
The fourth heat saw Lando start in pole and the team changed to slicks as it started to rain. He fell back to third, but soon came back and overtook and in the end won comfortably with a 2 second gap.
Lando started the pre-final in second and although fell back to fifth, got back to second with a one and a half second gap to first.
But as each lap went on he pulled nearer and nearer and was a lap off being able to close the gap, but had to settle instead for second.
The final saw Lando start in second and he got pushed back to sixth at the start.
He got back through to second and was chasing first, but was overtaken by the driver behind who then slowed right down on a hairpin, losing Lando precious time.
From there he struggled to get back into the race and he seemed to lose the pace he had in the pre-final and earlier - and had to be content with fifth.
He added: “It wasn’t a great way to finish the weekend, it wasn’t good seeing as how quick we were earlier.
“But we have some testing coming up and we are going to look at a few things that are going wrong.
“Hopefully we can get them sorted and be in a better place for the next round and be right back up there.”
