BRDC Rising Star Cameron Twynham produced another spirited EuroFormula Open performance during a challenging second round at Portimao last weekend (June 6-8).Following a disappointing Friday practice session, the Market Harborough teenager dug deep to qualify his Team West-Tec-run Dallara F312 third, only 0.167sec from the front row.A chaotic opening race saw the MSA Academy member initially vault to second before the Safety Car neutralised proceedings with nine laps remaining. However, race leader Artur Janosz’s restart tactics caught him off-guard, enabling Alex Palou and Yu Kanamaru to slip by and deny the 18-year-old another top-three result.“There was quite a lot of contact in race one due to multiple drivers exceeding track limits and re-joining,” explained Twynham. “It then appeared that [Artur] Janosz dropped his throttle twice on the restart which undoubtedly cost me a shot at the podium as I was passed twice into turn one.“However, I was delighted with fourth considering everything that happened! Although we’re lacking in straight-line speed, our pace was strong on other areas of the circuit.”Various set-up tweaks before Sunday morning’s qualifying run didn’t work as planned, leaving Twynham only 10th after an extremely close 30-minute session.Another trademark fast getaway was just what the Leicestershire-based driver needed in race two, although his progress was stymied by contact at turn one. Thankfully, he sustained no damage and maintained a comfortable rhythm en route to sixth.That helped Twynham consolidate fourth in both EuroFormula and the newly-formed Spanish F3 Championship standings, with six races held in Portimao, Jerez and Barcelona counting towards the latter title.“It’s been a crazy weekend all-in-all,” admitted Twynham. “Notwithstanding our risky decision to try something different for second qualifying, we can be happy with our one-lap pace. However, our race performance dropped off steeply, so it’s something we need to focus on. We’ve definitely made progress since the Nurburgring, but we need to improve further.“It’s disappointing not to finish on the podium, but we must be pleased with our results considering we had a tough weekend.
