Damage Limitation for Al Harthy After Tough Snetterton Qualifying‏

Ahmad Al Harthy says rounds five and six of the Avon Tyres British GT Championship will be all about damage limitation for the Oman Racing Team after a highly frustrating qualifying run at Snetterton 300 Circuit on Saturday, 21st June.Despite having to take a time penalty in the pit-stop this weekend, as a result of the squad’s outstanding win at Silverstone three weeks ago in the No.4 Aston Martin V12 Vantage GT3, the 32-year-old retained realistic hopes of a strong showing in the important grid-determining sessions. Both Ahmad and team-mate Michael Caine, though, had their respective runs compromised but the Omani came out of qualifying with the best performance – a lap of 1m52.703 seconds (94.83 mph) securing a fifth row start for the first of Sunday’s races. Although badly held up by traffic on each of his fast laps, Ahmad remains as focused as ever to mount a major challenge for points.“Qualifying was a disaster for us really, we had so much traffic – it was just unfortunate”, explained the Middle Eastern racer, “It’s really disappointing, P10 on the grid is definitely not where we were capable of starting but we just couldn’t get the space we needed to show our real pace.“It’s going to be really tough in the races, Snetterton is a very difficult track to overtake on – we know that based on past experience – but we just need to focus on trying to make up as many places as we can, take advantage of any opportunities and score as many points as possible.”Caine took the wheel of the Oman Air, Oman Ministry of Tourism, Oman Ministry of Sports Affairs, Nawras, National Bank of Oman and Al Hashar Group/Aston Martin Oman-liveried car for the round six session, the faster of the two 15-minute periods. With the run impacted by a red flag stoppage, and more issues with traffic, the Newmarket-based driver – competing at his ‘home’ track this weekend – posted a best effort of 1m50.757 seconds (96.50 mph) which equated to 17th on the race two grid.“Michael had problems like I did with traffic in his session, and there was the red flag too”, reflected Ahmad, “Qualifying certainly didn’t turn out as planned for us and so there is a lot of work to do, the pit-stop penalty we have from Silverstone won’t help either. It’s all about damage limitation.”The team-mates go into the latest rounds of the British GT campaign third in the title race, only 4.5 points shy of the championship lead. Round five of the season will get underway at 11.40 (local time) this morning, Sunday, 22nd June, with round six set to follow at 16.25 (local time).Provisional 2014 Avon Tyres British GT Championship Driver Standings (after Rd4):3rd Ahmad Al Harthy & Michael Caine, 70pts
