Electrical Woes Hit Caygill's VW Cup Prospects At Spa‏

Josh Caygill endured a frustrating visit to Spa-Francorchamps over the weekend during the fifth event of the 2014 Milltek Sport Volkswagen Racing Cup, the Netherton racer battling into the top 12 from the back of the grid in race two after being forced out of race one with ongoing wiring issues.Going into the UK-based championship’s sole overseas event of the season fourth in the standings and aiming to maintain his superb consistency, the Volkswagen Scirocco driver instead had to focus on a damage limitation exercise following the dramas of the opening contest on Friday, 11th July. The weekend as a whole was a near write-off for the 24-year-old from the outset, his car constantly cutting out during practice and qualifying to leave him with less than 10 laps under his belt from the first four track sessions. With the unresolved issue also forcing an early retirement from race one, Caygill had to start the second encounter on Saturday, 12th July, from the back but his impressive charge through into the top 12 enabled him to round-out the weekend sixth in the points table with four races remaining.“It’s not been a great weekend to say the least, but I was happy enough with my performance in race two”, said the second year VW racer, “We only managed about seven laps between the test on Thursday and Saturday’s race, we had electrical problems throughout so had no practice to speak of.“In the end it turned out there was a loose wire under the steering column, the team found it before Saturday’s race but the rest of the weekend was a bit of a write-off. I had three laps in the wet in session one on Thursday, two laps on slicks on a damp track in session two and then we missed the third practice completely. It wasn’t the weekend we wanted that’s for sure!”Having to settle for a best lap time of 2m48.873 seconds (149.310 km/h) in qualifying, after his Scirocco cut-out just a handful of laps into the session, Caygill went into round nine at the Belgian Grand Prix track eyeing a major push and determined to make significant gains from 13th on the grid. Before the action actually got underway, though, his AWM-run car stuttered to a halt on the green flag lap and was towed back to the pits. Joining the action from the pitlane, the West Yorkshireman ventured back out onto the track but the issue returned and he had to retire after a single lap. Therefore having to begin round 10 from the back of the 25 car grid – with the starting order of the second race determined by the result of the first – Caygill expertly pieced together a tremendous first lap. Impressively threading his way through the order into 16th place over the first 4.3 miles, he then moved into 14th position on lap two with his Scirocco’s wiring problem finally fixed.Running close behind Chris Panayiotou, both drivers gained two places on the fifth tour when a couple of rivals fell back but, thereafter, Caygill had to settle for the top 12 after a slight moment led to him losing touch with the group ahead – and therefore missing out on the vital ‘tow’.During the first half of the race, the former British Supersport motorcycle racer’s lap times were strong and he delivered a best of 2m47.872 seconds (150.200 km/h) on the fourth tour. Just 0.6 seconds outside podium pace, and quicker than drivers in the top six, the pace gave an indication of what might have been possible had the electrical problem been located before qualifying.“Saturday’s race was good, the first lap was great, but I made a little mistake halfway through the race and so lost the tow with the cars in front”, he added, “To be fair, you can’t start last with a grid this big and get to where you want to be up at the front but we did a decent enough job after all of the problems.”Brands Hatch Grand Prix Circuit in Kent will host rounds 11 and 12 of the Milltek Sport Volkswagen Racing Cup over the weekend 30th/31st August. Before then, Caygill turns his attention back to the Volkswagen Scirocco R Cup which will resume on 2nd/3rd August at the Red Bull Ring in Austria.
