Speedway World Cup Kicks Off in Style

The Monster Energy Speedway World Cup is underway and kicked off in awesome style over the weekend at Event One in King’s Lynn, England.

The World Cup takes place over just seven days, with four events spanning three different countries and it was Great Britain, Australia, USA and Italy who got us going on Saturday night.

King’s Lynn’s Norfolk Arena was the venue and 6000 patriotic fans packed into the intimate stadium to see if their national hero’s could send them home happy - and it was the British fans wearing smiles at the end of the night.

Team GB, led by world champion Tai Woffinden, haven’t qualified for the Final since 2010 but inspired by their home support they had the night of their lives to shock an Aussie team missing captain Chris Holder through injury.

The British boys charged out of the blocks early to race into a lead and they refused to let anybody else grab hold of it, but they were pushed all the way.

Team USA, backed by Monster Energy, are working harder than anyone to claw themselves back to the top of the speedway world and they threw in some youngsters alongside veteran Greg Hancock - and what a night they had.

Against all the odds the American side finished ahead of Australia in second and showed that they are on their way back to the top with a very bright future. Those two sides qualify for Thursday’s Race Off in Bydgoszcz, Poland where four teams will battle it out for just one place in the Final.

Team GB skipper Tai Woffinden was awesome all night, and he told us how happy he was afterwards. “I am so stoked, what a performance from all the boys.

“It’s been a while since we made the Final but we’ve done it now and we can relax for a week, and then it’s all systems go. We’re desperate to do well but we know how hard it’s going to be, but tonight was just awesome and we’re a happy team right now.”

Event Two sees Sweden, Denmark, Latvia and Czech Republic go head-to-head in Vastervik, Sweden where the winners will join GB and Poland in the Final, with the two runners-up going into the last chance Race-Off.

We’ve had one event and one upset, will we see another on Tuesday? Keep it locked to monsterenergy.com to see what goes down!
