Top Five and Class Victory For Pidgley At Brands‏ Clio Cup

Team Pyro’s Ollie Pidgley took away a mixed bag of results from the fourth event of the 2014 Michelin Clio Cup Race Series at Brands Hatch Indy Circuit over the weekend, 26th/27th July, with a fantastic top five finish and class victory in round seven tempered by contact in round eight.Relishing his return to the 1.2-mile track which was the scene of his Renault Clio racing debut last September, the Downton teenager displayed good pace from the off with the sixth fastest time during qualifying – just 0.2 seconds shy of the front row of the grid for the opening encounter. At the start of round seven on Saturday afternoon the 16-year-old unfortunately slipped to eighth place but, after seeing off the attentions of series returnee Pete Bennett, Pidgley began to close on category race winners Andy Jordan and Luke Herbert.Following a mistake for Jordan on lap eight, the Pyro youngster gladly seized seventh place and just two laps later he profited from someone else’s error again when team-mate Brett Smith had a spin at McLaren out of third place.Holding sixth place into lap 14, Pidgley was right in the wheeltracks of the cars ahead but at the exit of Paddock Hill Bend fellow Pyro racer Jeff Smith had a heavy excursion into the barriers. With his stricken car coming to rest in the centre of the track, officials red flagged the contest. In the end, Pidgley took a strong top five finish as well as the Sport Class victory and, importantly, he finished the race with a best lap just 0.1 seconds shy of that managed by vastly experienced race winner, and championship leader, Mike Robinson.“I was working as hard as I could to keep [Pete] Bennett behind, he was catching me gradually, but then halfway through the race I sort of clicked the switch and started to catch the guys in front”, said the MSA Academy driver, “First [Andy] Jordan came off, then [Brett] Smith came off a couple of laps later but all the while I was catching the lead group and getting really close to Luke Herbert.“If the race hadn’t been cut short, it would have been really close right to the end between me and Herbert. It’s difficult to overtake at the Indy Circuit, the only corner you can really try is Paddock Hill or maybe Graham Hill Bend – but it’s so easy to lose time trying. I’m happy with fifth place.”After such a strong and competitive showing in the first encounter, hopes were justifiably high for round eight on Sunday but it all went wrong for Pidgley on lap 16 when an incident involving Brett Lidsey led to a dramatic spin for the Pyro racer.Pressuring eighth placed Lidsey hard for several laps, Pidgley grabbed the position at Paddock Hill Bend on lap 16 but the Kent driver hit back soon after. Then, on the run through Graham Hill Bend, Pidgley managed to get alongside Lidsey at the exit but contact severely dented the right-hand door and pitched the Pyro car into a spin.Pidgley was able to recover to the track, albeit a long way down, but took the points for 12th place to climb one position in the championship back into the top eight. He is now within just six points of the top five in the driver standings.Snetterton 300 Circuit in Norfolk will host rounds nine and 10 of the Michelin Clio Cup Race Series over the weekend 30th/31st August. For the first time in the short history of the championship, the category will benefit from live television coverage as part of the planned Motors TV ‘Live Raceday’ at the East Anglian track.
