It was a strange weekend for Josh Day and the Ruby Racing team at round one of the Motorpoint British Supersport Championship at Donington Park. After a frantic week running up to the event after a big crash in testing, the team worked hard to get the Triumph right for the first round. Josh had a few initial problems with set-up on Saturday but the Ruby Racing team solved this and he had a good qualifying session.
The 26-year-old from Swindon ended up eighth fastest Evo bike and was 20th on the grid. However a niggling back pain saw him take a trip to the medical centre after qualifying and an x-ray there showed a fractured vertebrae and he was sent to hospital for further examination. It was later discovered the injury was an old injury that Josh did not know about but this forced him to miss race one.
After been given the ok by the medics on Monday morning, Josh went out in warm up to see how he felt and with no major problems the team made the decision to race, starting from the back of the grid in the process. Josh really did ride an astonishing race from the back of the pack, he got a great start and after the opening lap was already up to 12th Evo rider. As the 18-lap race progressed, Josh got quicker and quicker and was picking off riders on every lap. By lap 13 he was fully in the mix for a podium place and was unfortunate to lose out on the last lap to Levi Day, finishing fourth Evo rider.
Josh Day - "It really has been a mixed weekend this weekend. I had a bit of lower back ache on Saturday and after qualifying on Sunday it was still giving me a bit of grief so I thought I'd best get it checked in the medical centre. I wasn't expecting them to tell me I had fractured a vertebrae! They sent me to hospital for further checks and it was discovered that it was an old injury which was then aggrevated in my crash in testing last week.
I had to do another medical on Monday morning and thankfully they allowed me to race. I knew it would be a tough job starting from the back but I got my head down and worked my way through. I was pretty surprised at myself that I managed to find myself in the mix for a podium position and know when I'm feeling a bit better at Brands that we have the pace to do even better. Thanks to all the guys at Ruby Racing for working so hard this last week and getting me back out on the bike."
