Delaney boys back in rally action at MIRA

Following their recent success, the Delaney boys - 15 year-old Tom and father Dominic, from Droitwich Spa - will be back in action next weekend, as they tackle the Horiba D'Isis Stages Rally at the MIRA (Motor Industry Research Association) test centre near Hinkley in Leicestershire. However, unlike last time, the pair will be in the same car as they target several key objectives on the one-day event.Last time out, Tom was second in the Formula 1000 Junior category with regular co-driver Joe Cruttenden alongside. Dominic was also ninth overall on his return to competitive driving after a two-decade absence, with Joe's father Tim Cruttenden co-driving for him. However, next weekend will see Dominic at the wheel and Tom on the pace-notes, co-driving for his dad. While Tom is more used to driving this year, the event is not part of the F1000 championship and hence, there is no dispensation for under-17 year olds to drive. However, the event may form part of the series for 2016 and therefore, the pairing will use this year's event to gain valuable experience for next year.In addition, the rally will allow Dominic to drive the car 'in anger' and assess its performance and behaviour accurately. While he has driven Tom's SVP-prepared and run 1000cc Suzuki Alto several times on tests, these rarely simulate actual competition conditions and therefore, he will be able to check the car is working well or conversely, whether there is an issue that Tom has been compensating for so far. Finally, it will be a useful experience for Tom to gain more of an understanding of the co-driver's role in the pairing, which is far more than just calling the notes.Commenting, Tom said; "I'm looking forward to being back in the car, even though it will be in the 'wrong' seat! But it will be good experience for me, to understand more of the co-driver's role but also, see what Dad can do with the car. I've grown up with him driving but it will be interesting to see him when he is going for it."Dominic said; "While this year's event isn't part of the F1000 championship, there is a chance it might join the series next year so any experience will be useful. But also, it will give me a chance to work the car hard and check that everything is working as it should and there aren't any problems Tom is driving round."I think this will probably be the first time I will drive at full speed with one of the kids in the car and not get shouted at!"The one-day event sees crews tackle eight stages at the MIRA test venue in the Midlands on Saturday 25 April.
