SRO Motorsports Group’s latest series, the GT Sports Club, will have its maiden race this weekend. During the popular Espíritu de Montjuïc meeting at the Circuit de Catalunya more than a dozen eager Bronze drivers will take each other on, in order to become the first race winner of the GT Sports Club.The GT Sports Club came to life at the end of last year, to fill a gap that had been created due to the ever-increasing competitiveness of the Blancpain GT Series. Some gentlemen drivers felt they no longer had their place in the high-level GT Series, and looked for greener pastures.To meet their demands – and to return to its amateur driver roots – the SRO Motorsports Group created the GT Sports Club, which is exclusively reserved for Bronze drivers. In this sprint series there will be only one driver per car, and each of the four meetings consists of a free practice and qualifying session, followed by a 25-minute Qualifying Race and a 40-minute Main Race.The concept drew a lot of attention from Bronze drivers from all over the world and thirteen of them will participate in the inaugural meeting on the track near Barcelona, with more likely to join from the next event, when the GT Sports Club will be part of the popular Blancpain GT Series race meetings. Three categories exist in the GT Sports Club: the overall ranking, the newly-created Iron Cup for drivers aged 60 and over, and the Cup Class for drivers with cars from single-make championships.In Barcelona all three categories will be represented, with the majority of the field competing for the overall win. Five prestigious car brands (Aston Martin, Audi, Ferrari, Lamborghini and Porsche) will be on the grid, entered by eight different teams.
