Canamasas claims podium finish in Monaco GP2

Great result for the  MP Motorsport driver in the GP2 Series feature race in Monte Carlo, as he managed to step onto the podium by finishing 3rd from 9th on the grid. His passing maneuver on Pic at Sainte Dévote to be one of the best overtakes this year.

Work bore fruit for Sergio Canamasas in Monte Carlo, where one of the most special weekends of the year in the GP2 Series is held. This narrow racing track, maybe the most challenging one for any driver and where talent shines, saw Canamasas´ first podium of 2015 at the wheel of the Dallara entered by MP Motorsport. In addition, the Barcelona-born driver delivered one of his strongest performances.

Starting from ninth on the grid, Canamasas moved up to 8th on lap one despite he was on the harder tire compound. When other drivers ahead have pitted for their compulsory pit stops, Canamasas was running in 5th place and matching leaders´ pace - Rossi and Vandoorne-. On lap 20, when a Virtual safety car was put into action, Canamasas pitted and overtook Sirotkin. But Canamasas entered the crucial moment eight laps later, when he made a successful clean pass into turn 1 on Pic for fourth. For many it was the move of the race. With podium in his sights, 3rd-placed Leal was given a 10-second penalty as a result of unsafe release in the pit lane. It secured Canamasas´ podium finish today.

“I would like to dedicate this result to my father and Alba, who are always standing by my side. It was a strategic race, as we started on soft tires and pitting during virtual safety car period. A key moment was when I passed Pic for fourth. Then my team communicated me via radio Leal´s ten´second penalty, so I decided not taking risks”, Canamasas said. “It was a moment when Pic was running nose to tail but I felt confident enough to pass Leal just in case. I managed the race properly. This podium here is so special. I have no words to describe my emotions right now. It rewards our hard work. Tomorrow I will try my best again”.
