Southern 100: 60 Year's of Racing, Only Two Clerk's of the Course

Joe Mylchreest & Phil Taubman

As the Southern 100 celebrates its Diamond Jubilee this year, having made its racing debut on Thursday 15th July 1955, amongst the many facts and figures that have been brought up is the fact that over the 60 years, the ‘friendly races’ which the meeting has become known over many years, has only had two Clerks of Course, Joe Mylchreest and Phil Taubman.

Joe took up the mantle in 1955 and continued up to and including 1977, some 23 years when he stepped down and and a young Phil Taubman took over control in 1978 and 38 years later ‘Tubby’ is still’ the man in charge’ at the Southern 100.

The two C of C’s met up during the final preparations for the Diamond Jubilee Races and are seen outside the Race Control at the Start- Finish which was put in place to Celebrate the Golden Jubilee, ten years ago!
