Burton claims WWRS R.A.C. win on Epynt

Phil Burton and Mal Capstick won again in the sixth round of the West Wales Rally Spares R.A.C. Rally Championship, the Harry Flatters Rally (Sunday 26 July). Despite this being his first visit to the Epynt ranges and his first asphalt rally for 22 years, Burton set a cracking pace in his Ford Escort Mk2 to win convincingly as persistent rain hit the event. The victory for Burton and Capstick has set them up as strong contenders for the overall title when the season concludes on the Trackrod Rally in Yorkshire in September. With the Toyota Starlet of local crew Layton Waters and Tudor Jenkins posting an early retirement, second place among the R.A.C. contenders went to Barry Stevenson-Wheeler and John Pickavance, another crew making their Epynt debut.Among the historic crews in the R.A.C. Championship, Grahame Standen and Jane Edgington (Ford Escort Mk2) were expected to set the pace, but slid off on wet grass and hit a large boulder. Though there was considerable damage to the car, the crew members were okay. Instead, Malcolm Bayliss and Siobhan Pugh battled home despite worries over the gearbox in their Escort Mk1.Category winners were:Category 1: no startersCategory 2: Malcolm Bayliss/Siobhan Pugh (Ford Escort Mk1)Category 3: no finishersCategory O: Phil Burton/Mal Capstick (Ford Escort Mk2)The Harry Flatters Rally was organised by Brecon Motor Club.
