Nurburgring weather hampers Zele in problematic Renault Sport Trophy weekend

Although Vittorio Ghirelli came from far back on the grid to finish sixth in Saturday’s race on the Nürburgring, recording the second fastest lap of the weekend in the process, the Renault Sport Trophy event in Germany did not go the way Zele Racing had hoped for.

“We were highly motivated and well prepared. But our expectations were deflated by a bad qualifying, which spoiled all our chances of being closer to the top”, team boss Michael Zele said.

In Sunday’s Elite sprint race, both drivers, Ghirelli and Bas Schothorst, struggled with very poor traction in heavy rain and could not battle for the podium.

Colombian rookie Andrés Méndez showed off with P7 in the Prestige Sprint race. “A good result for him. He managed to keep his car on the track in tricky conditions.”

Teammate Philippe Bourgois was less fortunate and spun off the track in the closing laps of the race.

“Our display in the rain was not what we had expected, but that’s racing. We will make some changes and be all out on attack in ten days, when we hit the track again at LeMans.”
