Pirelli competitors prepare for Wales Rally GB challenge

The final round of the FIA World Rally Championship takes place in Wales on November 12-15. Many of the frontrunners will run on Pirelli rubber, including some home heroes.

Combilift Rally Team brothers Sam and Josh Moffett are ready to tackle Wales Rally GB in their Pirelli-equipped Ford Fiesta RS WRCs. The Irish duo are seeded in 22nd and 23rd, just behind WRC regulars Martin Prokop and Lorenzo Bertelli.

The Moffett brothers have been building their knowledge of the stages in Wales by competing on the Plains Rally in May and the Cambrian Rally last month. Josh finished second and third on those events, with Sam sixth and fourth.

“There’s a magnificent entry for the rally so we can’t wait to get started,” said Sam Moffett. “We’ll do a test on the Thursday before. We’ve used Pirelli tyres for the past eight years so we know they’re the best gravel tyres. We’re very happy to be on them on Rally GB.”

Five-time MSA Scottish Rally Champion David Bogie will drive his Ford Fiesta R5 on the event with Kevin Rae alongside. The pair are brimming with confidence following their Cambrian Rally win earlier this month. The Cambrian uses similar stages to the ones the WRC regulars will tackle in Britain’s WRC round.

Pirelli joins The Sun and WD40 in Rally GB effortThe Sun motoring editor Rob Gill is entering Wales Rally GB in a Pirelli-shod Ford Fiesta R5. It will be the eighth time the journalist has entered the top rally in Great Britain, and with an R5-specification car his expectations are high.

“Wales Rally GB continues to be a favourite event for drivers and fans alike and the four-day event is certainly a challenge,” he said. “I can’t wait to get back behind the wheel and take on the world’s best drivers in some of the UK’s most iconic rally stages.”

Gill will be co-driven by Anders Howard. The pair warmed up for the event by entering the Cambrian Rally last month, but they retired after just three stages.

Duggan fired up for Pirelli-supported Rally GB entryRoad to Wales winner Rob Duggan will run a Citroen DS 3 R3 Max on Wales Rally GB. The drive is part of the prize for winning the Road to Wales, which was open to all competitors in R2-spec cars in the Northern Irish Rally Championship.

David Greer Motorsport will provide the all-expenses paid prize with support from Pirelli. Duggan, who will be co-driven by Ger Conway, claimed the prize by one point from Jon Armstrong. Duggan and Conway had their first taste of the R3-spec car in a test last week.

“I’m absolutely delighted to have won,” said Duggan. “It’s been a long year but the effort my sponsors and everyone in the team have put in to try and win this prize drive has been worth it. It’s good to come out on top against some very talented and extremely fast drivers. We’re really excited for Rally GB.”
