Exciting Finnish racer Aleksanteri Huovinen has today, Tuesday, 15th December, finalised a deal to join Double R Racing for the 2016 Duo BRDC Formula 4 Championship – completing the team’s line-up for its maiden season in the category.
Partnering Matheus Leist and Enzo Bortoleto at Double R next year, the 19-year-old’s arrival at the team continues the rich history and links Anthony ‘Boyo’ Hieatt’s squad has enjoyed with drivers from Finland over the years – none more famous, of course, than former FIA Formula One World Champion Kimi Räikkönen who first set-up Double R with Steve Robertson and Hieatt in late 2004.
Huovinen is currently testing the brand new Tatuus-Cosworth BRDC F4 car with Double R in Valencia, Spain, and the teenager has made a major impression on team boss Hieatt who is absolutely elated to have filled the squad's three seats so soon after confirming its involvement in the series just a fortnight ago.
“We’re all delighted to see Aleksanteri join the team for BRDC F4 next year, alongside Matheus and Enzo we’re confident we’ll have one of the strongest driver line-ups out there”, said Hieatt, “We’ve got a long and successful history of working with Finnish and Scandinavian drivers, and big links to Finland through Kimi of course, and I’m confident Aleksanteri is going to be another success.
“He’s impressed us from what we’ve seen in testing so far and I really do think he’ll be right at the front from the word go when the championship starts in March. He had some good results in the SMP F4 Championship this year and has adapted to the greater power and downforce of the BRDC car very quickly. Everything looks very positive for Double R in 2016.”
Huovinen, who hails from Oulu in Finland, began his motorsport career in karting back in 2009 and after five seasons he graduated into cars in 2013 with six races in Finnish Formula Ford. Contesting a full season of Formula Ford the following year, he took five wins on his way to the Vice-Champion’s spot in the standings.
Switching to SMP F4 this year, he began the season superbly with three victories from the first four races and ultimately ended the campaign fourth in the championship. Now, with his move into the much more powerful UK-based BRDC F4 series, Huovinen is looking to make a big impact.
“It’s fantastic we’ve signed with Double R and I can’t wait for next season to start”, commented the Finn, “Working with the team so far has been really good, the guys are so professional and really know what to do with the car – they’ve helped me with my driving too and I’ve definitely found a lot of time already.
“The car is really good, very fast and the downforce is much more than I’ve been used to. I think we have a great chance to be competitive next year, I know I can be quick and that the guys at Double R will give me a great car.”
Snetterton 300 Circuit in East Anglia will host the opening three races of the 2016 BRDC F4 season over the weekend 27th/28th March.
