Double R relishing second season in MSA Formula with young hot shots

Zane Goddard and Carrie Schreiner

Double R Racing team boss Anthony ‘Boyo’ Hieatt says the Woking squad is eyeing a consistent challenge for honours in its second season of action in the MSA Formula category, after officially confirming the signings of highly-rated young racers Zane Goddard and Carrie Schreiner.

While still hoping to field a capacity three-car entry in this year’s championship, Double R has made an excellent start to 2016 in MSA Formula with highlight performances from 16-year-old Australian Goddard and 17-year-old German driver Schreiner in pre-season testing.

Goddard, who arrives in the UK with experience of FIA Formula 4 in his homeland, produced a stunning performance to go fastest on the opening morning of official testing at Brands Hatch Indy Circuit in late February and was only 0.034 seconds shy of the top spot during the afternoon run.

Female racer Schreiner, who will contest four of the MSA Formula race meetings due to existing commitments in the ADAC Formula 4 Championship in her native Germany, was an impressive sixth fastest at Brands on the first morning and ended the test within just 0.5 seconds of the pace.

“We’ve been very impressed up to now with Zane and Carrie, they’re fantastic young drivers and both have a very bright future”, said team principal Hieatt, “Zane knows the car from the Australian championship and, after his performance at Brands, we’ve got very high hopes.

“He knows James Courtney, who I worked with back in 2002 in Formula 3, so there’s a great link there and I’m pretty confident he’s going to be a front-runner all season. Zane is definitely going to be one to watch this year.”

Hieatt added: “We’d love for Carrie to be in the car for the whole season, but she’s already committed to the ADAC championship. I’ve been very pleasantly surprised with just how well she’s gone in testing, she set the second quickest time ever in one of our MSA cars at Pembrey so she could well spring a few surprises.”

Goddard, from Surfers Paradise in Australia, claimed one podium last year in his domestic F4 series on his way to ninth in the championship. Prior to that, he raced in Junior Max karting and was Vice-Champion in the Australian Rotax Nationals.

Double R team-mate Schreiner, from Volklingen in Germany, graduated into car racing last year in the ADAC F4 series after a strong karting career which delivered a top five finish in the ADAC Kart Masters in 2014. Back in 2010, she placed sixth in the WAKC World Formula Light Kart Series and fourth in the DSW Cup World Formula Light. In 2012, Schreiner won the X30 Junior title in ADAC.

Brands Hatch Indy Circuit in Kent, Double R’s ‘home’ track, will host the opening three races of the MSA Formula season over the weekend 2nd/3rd April. While Goddard will contest the full campaign, Schreiner will compete at the first event and will then race at Thruxton in May, Rockingham at the end of August and at Silverstone in September.
