Motors TV Weekend Highlights August 6,7

August has arrived and that means we’re just days away from Opening Ceremony of the Rio Olympics. But if you ask us, there’s a definitive lack of petrol-infused action on the bill at the Games, so why not come over to the High Speed Television Channel and indulge in another weekend of two and four wheel festivities?

We start with live coverage of the FIM MXGP from Frauenfeld in Switzerland, just a stone’s throw from the German border. Toni Cairoli won both races in Germany earlier this year but has since been unable to mount a consistent challenge to runaway points leader and rookie sensation Tim Gajser. Indeed, he’ll be looking over his shoulder this weekend as his second place in the standings could come under threat from Germany’s Max Nagl, who swept the Czech Republic and added a fourth win of the season last time out in Belgium.

Meanwhile in MX2, Swiss rider Jeremy Seewer will look to use his local knowledge to take his first win of the season. In the continued absence of long-time championship leader Jeffrey Herlings through injury, a good weekend on home soil for Seewer could set up a fascinating twist in the title battle heading into the final three rounds.

Back on four wheels, we’ll be bringing you highlights of the F1-supporting Porsche Supercup from the Hungaroring and Hockenheim. The season so far has seen a fascinating three-way battle unfold between Porsche juniors Sven Mueller, Mathieu Jaminet and Matteo Cairoli. Now in his third season in the championship, last year’s runner-up Mueller made his experience pay with back to back wins at the Red Bull Ring and Silverstone, but could his two young rivals return the favour?

Next we’re over to Asia for a double bill of GT action from the GT Asia Series at Fuji and Audi R8 LMS Cup Asia at Thailand’s Buriram circuit. Bentley and Audi have been the cars to beat in GT Asia so far, but will have to watch out for a resurgent Craft-Bamboo Porsche featuring defending champion Darryl O’Young, while in the R8 LMS Cup, could Rahel Frey hold onto her championship lead with ex-F1 racer Alex Yoong and promising youngster Alessio Picariello breathing down her neck?

Then it’s back to British shores for the Historic Sportscar Club 50th Anniversary meeting, fittingly held on the legendary Brands Hatch Grand Prix circuit. With classic single-seaters, GT and sportscars as well as the awesome late 90s Super Tourers, including the flame-spitting TWR Volvo S40 all on show, there’s something here to suit every taste.

But if all of that isn’t enough, we’ll have all the action from the madcap Chateau Impney Hillclimb, India’s MRF National Supercross Championship and a slipstream-fest of Caterham racing from Snetterton. Still want to watch the Opening Ceremony?
