Metro madness at Wimbledon

Spedeworth Southern lifted the winter gloom at Plough Lane on Sunday, December 12th with the hilarious Siamese Racers (Metro perched on top of a Ford Sierra) 100 do-or-die Metro Banger racers and the awesome V8 Stock Cars in action.

The V8 Stock Cars got things off to a blistering pace as the Chevrolet V8 powered machines tore around the track in pursuit of the Les Gamblin Memorial Trophy. The V8’s heavy iron front bumpers were used to good effect with the win and prestigious trophy going to 167, Stu Wood.

The Metro Bangers delivered a night’s worth of racing mayhem as the little buzz bombs ploughed into each other with total abandon from the second the green flag fell to start the first race. Plough Lane resembled a Metro graveyard, with several race stoppages to clear the track of the smoking remains of what was once Aunty Joyce and Uncle Bert’s favourite family runabout. 194, Steve ‘Cecil’ Anscombe drove well to win the first heat, with 264, Mark Welland taking the next. The metal-bending final saw Anscombe again steer through the carnage to take the flag.

The V8s returned for another race honouring one of the sport’s great and much missed drivers, Terry O’ Connor. The drivers really put the pedal to the metal for this one treating the crowd to the sight and sound of over 20 ground-shaking V8-powered cars going full throttle around Plough Lane. The safety fence took quite a battering before the race was won by 238, Darren Mitchell.

The crowd-pleasing Siamese racers were also in action as the bizarre Metro perched on top of a Sierra creations waddled around the track to peals of laughter from the assembled fans. Needless to say rollovers were the order of the day, with several pilots ending up with interesting views of the track as the Siamese cars flopped and rolled around the circuit. There was (no pun intended) a double win for 503, Nick Harman and Jay Hinton, who somehow managed to keep their wacky racer upright long enough to see the chequered flag waved.

The evening’s entertainment was rounded off with a huge field of Metros ready to battle to the death in the demolition derby. The mangled Metros were soon ground to scrap metal as the last two gladiators expired in a massive head on crash on the back straight. Neither Metro was capable of moving so the event was declared a joint win for 867 and 852, Jamie Renwick.

There will be more action over the Christmas holiday on December 27th when the Big Van Bangers, Stock Rods, and Stock Cars deliver another value for money night out for all the family at Wimbledon Stadium, Britain’s finest stock car racing circuit.
