Slights set for Classic Challenge

Peter Slights will end a seven-year break from rallying to contest the 2005 HRCR Classic Stage Rally Challenge in a newly-prepared Ford Escort Mk2. The Yorkshire ace is one of a growing band of competitors joining the Classic category and is one of 19 Classic entries already received for the opening event of the season, the Robin Hood Forest Stages on 12/13 March."I've always been a Mk2 fan and I set about building one a couple of years ago," says Slights. "I wanted it to be right and I'm pleased with it. I do enjoy building rally cars," says the garage owner from York.Initially, the plan is to contest the Robin Hood and then take things from there, but if all goes well, Slights could be a major contender for the Classic category this season as the cars run as part of the Armajaro MSA British Historic Rally Championship.Slights rallied a Mk2 Escort to win the BTRDA title in 1985 and then went on to compete in an Opel Manta, Metro 6R4, 4x4 Sapphire Cosworth, Lancia Delta Integrale and the ex-Dai Llewellyn Audi Quattro. However, he has not competed regularly for seven years. He has also established a deserved reputation for first class preparation on rally cars, notably Metro 6R4s and he currently tends up to seven of them. Now, he will return to a Mk2 Escort and relishes the prospect of driving the BDG-powered car. "I'm hoping I enjoy it as much as I used to; it seems like a really good format."
