Sandy Mitchell delivered a dominant performance, including a pole position and setting a new lap record, to seal his first two race wins in the USA.
The 19-year-old from Forfar, backed by Huntly-based Black Bull Whisky, powered to victory in both Lamborghini Super Trofeo North American Championship races at Road America in Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin.

Partnered by his Italian team-mate, Andrea Amici, Mitchell took the chequered flag in his No. 1 Prestige Performance Lamborghini Huracán, prepared by Wayne Taylor Racing, to clinch his first win in the States.

Mitchell’s first Road America victory came just six days after he took the biggest race win of his career, the Silver Cup class win in the Spa 24-Hours, the Blue Riband event of the Blancpain GT Series.
Just 24 hours after his first win Stateside, Mitchell was again in blistering form. Starting from pole position in the second 50-minute Road America race, he stormed to an 11-second lead, shattering the lap record twice, before handing the car over to team-mate Amici who controlled the gap to the chequered flag.

“It’s always great to get a double win,” Mitchell, part of the Lamborghini Squadra Corse GT3 Junior Program and a member of the prestigious British Racing Drivers’ Club Rising Star scheme, said. “To get our first win of the season on Saturday, and then follow that with our second win 24-hours later was pretty awesome.
“The car was absolutely perfect all weekend. In the second race I got a great start from pole, managed to push really hard over the opening three laps and then saved the tyres a bit for Andrea’s second stint.
“He managed the gap through the second-half of the race and brought the car home for our second win of the weekend.

“Two wins, a pole position and a lap record. Not really much more I could ask from a weekend.”
Such was Mitchell’s pace in the second race at the four-mile permanent road course that he broke the lap record, which had stood since 2016, on his third lap, stopping the clock at 2mins 06.428secs.
On the next lap he went even faster, clocking 2:05.961s, an average speed of more than 115mph on the tight, twisty undulating circuit.
Mitchell’s double victory also moved the duo into second in the championship, despite not finishing the opening round when their Lamborghini caught fire.

“There’s no denying these two wins have boosted our title hopes,” Mitchell stated. “We had a bit of bad luck in the first race at Barber, when we failed to finish.
“But since then we’ve looked good and we’ve clawed back  lot of points to the leaders. Now we’re right back in the fight for the title and we head to the next double-header at the Virginia International Raceway determined to maintain this form.”
