The latest consignment to be creating waves at recently launched auction website Bidding Classics is an ultra-rare Ford Escort Mexico. The 1972 model is just one of six official factory-built four-door prototype or ‘trial’ vehicles and is based upon the Type 49 strengthened bodyshell.

With the Mexico being one of the most desirable vehicles in Ford’s Escort range, there were a number of variations assembled for testing: three estate cars and one van, but arguably it was the four-door that potentially had the most appeal to those with growing families, yet still keen to emulate their rallying heroes!

Only six genuine four-door Escort Mexicos were officially assembled; according to Dan Williamson’s Factory Original Sporting Mk1 Escorts, one was retained by Ford, another sold to a customer and four were used as police cars in Jersey – each in full Mexico specification and powered by a 1.6-litre Crossflow engine.

This particular example has been subjected to a sympathetic restoration by the current owner and boasts a recent exterior respray in its original Tawny colour and a full engine rebuild. The vehicle has covered under 37,000 miles and is in virtually pristine condition – it certainly would not look out of place in any respectable motor museum!
