In the early 1960s, after the Ford Motor Company was rebuffed by Ferrari in its attempts to buy the Italian marque as a ticket to international endurance racing success, it was decided that if Ferrari couldn't be bought, then it must be beaten!

Based on Eric Broadley's Lola GT, the new ‘GT40’ project commenced in 1963, based at Ford’s Advanced Vehicles plant at Slough, England. To strengthen their team, and in addition to Broadley, Ford engaged former Aston Martin racing director John Wyer and other experienced 'racers' such as Phil Hill, Richie Ginther and Ken Miles.

The GT40 first ran competitively in 1964 but failed at Le Mans that year and again in 1965. That first sweet Le Mans victory would fall to the 7-litre MkII, with victory the following year going to a US-built MkIV 'J' car (the MkIII being the British-built road-going version). The GT40 blew away the competition to win Le Mans in 1966/67/68/69, becoming the most iconic and successful underdog in Le Mans history, and a very tough act to follow.

Some 40 years after the birth of the original GT project, and arriving in prototype form just in time for Ford's centennial celebration in 2003, the new Ford GT borrowed heavily from the stunning design and profile of the original. Launched with similar aims of shaking up the supercar establishment of the day, this new high performance Ford showcased cutting edge construction technologies and materials, a mid-mounted, hand-built, supercharged quad-cam 550bhp V8 engine and race-derived suspension and braking systems. The standard car delivered astounding performance and power, sprinting from 0-60 in 3.5 seconds, en route to a maximum of some 205mph. When production ceased in 2006 this epic weapon became an instant collector's car.

Introducing the Roush/Hennessey 1000RE

As production of the GT model ended in 2006, around 10 of the remaining cars were sent to Roush Europe for upgrade work, in association with the UK importer Avro Motor Cars. By modifying the supercharger, Roush pushed the power by 10% to over 600 bhp, now breathing through a freer-flowing Tubi exhaust and uprated transmission-oil cooler. The cars were fitted with “600RE” stickers on both doors, as well as new door-sill covers and a plaque affixed to the centre console.

Originally one of the ten 600RE models, we understand after around a year of UK ownership, the previous owner of our example (#00473) delivered the car to special tuners Hennessy to breathe yet more fire into the GT. With the aid of two additional turbo chargers boosted to c. 18.5psi, an increase in the rev limit and a special turbo-back exhaust, the GT was now putting out a remarkable 1000bhp, propelling the car to 60 mph in a mere 2.8 seconds (!), on the way to a phenomenal top speed of 235 mph.

We understand in around 2011 the GT suffered unrecorded minor damage to the front and rear of the car, which was professionally repaired before being placed into current storage.

Since then, and in current ownership as part of a private classic car collection for approximately 14 years, the Ford has been dry stored and not driven on the road. The car has been started and warmed up on a regular basis, firing up every time immediately with no issues or warning lights. Having not been driven on the road for a number of years, and sitting on its original tyres, the GT will no doubt benefit from recommissioning before being pressed into regular use.

This outrageously powerful 1000RE is offered complete with original McIntosh radio, all books/wallet, clear HPI report, and both sets of keys/fobs. Now showing just 5,900 miles recorded, this is truly a unique opportunity to buy the most powerful Ford supercar of the early 2000s.

Note: Interested parties should note that a current UK V5C has been applied for, and a new age-related registration number will be supplied with the vehicle.
