Motor sport fans looking to get closer to the action have a unique opportunity on the 15 March, when the annual marshals training day takes place at the Castle Combe circuit near Chippenham.

This year, for the first time, potential race day marshals have the chance to obtain an insight into the skills required, at the same time as some exciting on-track action is taking place. Whilst the recruits are shown a number of skills such as fire-fighting, first aid, dealing with incidents, communications and logistics, the track itself will play host to saloon car testing, an important pre-cursor to the first meeting of the year on Easter Monday.

Additionally, participants will be taught how to handle one of the new breed of cars with electronically controlled gearchanges. Should such a vehicle become stranded whilst in gear, with its engine unable to be started, it can be much more difficult to deal with than a car with a traditional gearbox. The Ferrari 360 Challenge of former savesometax.co.uk Castle Combe Special GT Champion, Keith Sprules, will be on site and used to demonstrate how such cars can be moved safely and quickly.

Marshalling at a race meeting is an activity for anyone with an interest in cars or motor sport and often becomes a lifetime ‘hobby’ for many people, who find the skills they learn to be valuable in a variety of situations.

No experience whatsoever is required, so if you would like to take part in the marshals training day, simply turn up at the circuit by 8-00 am on the day. There is no future obligation and no special equipment is needed, apart from outdoor clothing. Refreshments are provided.

The event takes place in the Wiltshire College building, just inside the entrance to the Westway car park and runs until 17.00.
