for Eggciting Easter weekend
Rising Welsh rally stars Elfyn Evans and Meilyr Evans are gearing up for an eggsplosive Easter this weekend as they head to Ireland for the second round of the Maxol E85 Ford Fiesta SportingTrophy.
On Easter Sunday the GEMsport drivers will be among the crews contesting the UAC Circuit of Ireland with Elfyn currently leading the series after a win on the Galway International Rally in February.
And both drivers have been working on their asphalt driving techniques with a day at a racing circuit and with instruction from an experienced racing driver
19 year old Elfyn from Dolgellau will once again have Gareth Jones on the notes and said that despite having one win under his belt already this season there was still much to learn.
“Meilyr and I are both still new to rallying in Ireland and have been grabbing every opportunity to fine tune a smooth and fast driving style and we both want to put what we have learnt from the racing experts into practice on the Irish roads,’’ said Elfyn.
“The disciplines are very different but both require the smoothest of techniques to get those extra seconds shaved off stage times and that’s what we will be concentrating on this weekend in the hustings.com Fiestas,’’ said 18 year old Meilyr.
With rally legend Gwyndaf Evans at the helm of the team, GEMsport is quickly building up an impressive reputation as being one of the most committed supporters of young rally drivers.
Gwyndaf, a former British Rally Champion and works driver for Ford, SEAT, MG and more recently Mitsubishi, said the whole team is enjoying being part of a huge effort to get British drivers into the World Rally Championship.
“This year the effort is on the Fiesta SportingTrophy in both the UK and Ireland and events such as this weekend’s Circuit of Ireland provide a great proving ground for drivers.’’
He said the rally would be tough from the outset with such tough competition in the Fiesta championship.
“We have a brand new car for this event so we have been busy at the GEMsport workshops getting everything ready and would dearly love to repeat the success of the first round with another win for the team.’’
The rally will see the Fiesta crews tackle 52 high speed stage miles in this hugely popular event organised by the Ulster Automobile Club
