The 2008 Porsche Club Championship kicks off at Donington Park, East Midlands, this Easter Monday with a bumper entry of over 30 cars - for what should be one of the best seasons of racing yet for the competitive series. Two 25-minute races will give the first indications of who will be the front-runners in the three-class championship,
Class One has its strongest entry for many seasons, with several ex-overall or class champions now battling for outright wins. 2007 champion Mark McAleer returns in the 968 CS that he took the title with last September, with 2006 champion Ian White returning armed with a 964 C2, and Tom Segrue - 2005 champion - in another 968 CS. Moving into Class One are 2007 Class Two champions Ben Demetriou, who should be rapidly on the pace in a 968, and the always quick Brian Robinson, while former Porsche Classic champion John Williams makes a welcome return in a Carrera RS.
It is the 968 CS model which has become a race winner in recent seasons that dominates Class One, with 11 of the cars entered for Donington. The opposition will come from a pair of 964s, with 2.7 Carreras making up the rest of the 18-car class.
The 944 SC is the car of choice in Class Two, with nine fighting for a place on the Donington grid. Trevor Lewis was a front-runner last year in the ex-Tom Segrue championship winning car, and other 944 challengers should be Mike Clapham and Alan Newbold. Charles Winterhalder steps up to the class with his 944 and should soon be on the pace, while David Burke returns in his 911 after some fine performances in his debut year in 2007.
Class Three sees the sole 911 SC of Sarah Bennett-Baggs challenging a clutch of 944s. New to Porsches but with endurance racing experience, Bennett-Baggs should be in the thick of the class action immediately, taking on class returnees Adrian Stock and Dave Roberts.
Qualifying for both races is on Monday, March 24th, morning, with the races scheduled to be second and sixth events on the nine race bill which starts at 12.40.
