Victoria’s Jack Waldron and navigator, Vin Gregory, have entered their 16th Targa Tasmania, which starts on April 15 in Launceston.
They will be part of a Classic car field that is the largest of any event in the country this year.
The pair will be back in their 1955 Fiat Abarth 750, the same car they used in the very first Targa Tasmania in 1992.
“We’ve competed in the same car with the same crew for 15 years,” Waldron said.
“It’s one of the oldest cars in the field,” the 60-year-old said. “When I was 18-years-old I used to compete against the car in the Fiat Car Club.
“The car was originally built in Italy. I came across it in an advertisement in the newspaper and bought it. I‘ve had it for about 20-odd years.”
The grey Fiat always draws smiles from onlookers as they compete in the five-day rally.
“We really enjoy Targa Tasmania, it’s a fantastic event,” he added.
“Tarmac Rallying is the area we love because of its unpredictability. It’s a totally different set of circumstances at every corner. The fact that you have to work in tandem with your navigator is a real buzz.”
The classic duo came first in class in 2006, and have been rallying together for most of their lives.
“Vin is my cousin, he’s been involved with my motor racing since I was 18-years-old. He’s very concise and clear with his pace notes. All of his calls are very considered.”
More than 110 classic entries have signed up for the April 15 start of the 17th running of Australia’s iconic tarmac event.
The well-known pair are looking forward to returning to Tasmania to once again compete in Targa Tasmania, which starts in Launceston and concludes with a ceremonial finish at Hobart’s Wrest Point on April 20.
